The boys and girls were so excited to see the boxes and couldn't wait to find out what was inside them. They were fighting to have an opportunity to help open the boxes. Then they saw the pictures on the packaging and realized we can have and make ice cream in our classroom. The look of absolute pleasure was wonderful. Then they were curious about the juicer, ice machine and ice shaver and how we would use them in our classroom. \r\nSince then we have had many different opportunities to make fantastic use of these amazing resources. We have used leftover apples and oranges from our breakfast and lunch program to make fresh juice, which tasted amazing! They keep asking for me to make it more often for them. We have used leftover yogurt from the breakfast program to make frozen yogurt. I can't wait to try and make fresh ice cream too. The ice machine and shaver have come in handy to make special treats for a student who is vegan and can't participate in impromptu parties because of his dietary restrictions. I top the shaved ice with fresh juice made from our juicer. By doing this he feels like he is included and a valued part of our classroom community instead of an outsider. He even felt so special helping out in making his special treat. \r\nThese resources will come in handy and be utilized more often when the weather turns warmer. Now, we are working on a brand new unit of study, all about pets. By the end of the unit the boys and girls will learn about different kinds of pets, how we take care of them, and even give them stuffed pets to adopt, take care of, and call their own. Since this is a new unit of study, it would be helpful to have more materials to help foster the boys and girls curiosity and growth in fine motor skills.","fullyFundedDate":1757037560763,"projectUrl":"project/waste-not-but-definitely-want/9327271/","projectTitle":"Waste Not but Definitely Want","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Mandelbaum","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4103911_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1480382296988","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/rmandelbaum"},{"teacherId":4103911,"projectId":9268183,"letterContent":"Thank you for your help in creating a memorable end-of-the-year celebration for my students and the other class who are graduating from preschool. They were awed and couldn't wait. The next week, I had all the student's try it on and took photos of them wearing it. These photos were sent to the parents and will be used in our graduation slideshow. \r\nI hid some of the items from the box so they will be surprised after their graduation ceremony to receive their special book and teddy bear. I can't wait to see their reaction, it will be priceless!\r\nNext, I am working to expand my reduce, reuse, and recycling unit by incorporating not wasting food and reusing it. We can do this by getting a juicer to use the leftover fruits from breakfast and lunch to juice them. As you may be aware, music and movement are important for children's development, fostering cognitive, emotional, social and physical skills as well as enhancing language, creativity and academic performance. Music and movement provide a safe and healthy outlet for children to express their emotions, both positive and negative. Playing music boosts children's confidence and self-esteem. Participating in music activities, like singing in a group or playing an instrument, foster's teamwork, communication and social interaction. Movement also provides a creative outlet to work on their physical development. Exposure to music and dance from different cultures broadens a child's understanding and appreciation of diversity.\r\n\r\nWhen the children were opening the packages, they were in awe and mesmerized by all the different musical equipment and movement activities that were there. They could not wait to try them out! They had a blast walking across the balance beam, testing out the ribbons to move and dance with, and trying to throw the bean bags into the holes on the bean bag toss. They were fascinated by the different sounds the shakers made, that we now have pianos which have xylophones attached , \"guitars\" (the ukuleles), and enough tambourines and rhythm sticks that they all could use it at the same time. \r\n\r\nThis project has already uplifted their moods, and will help foster a safe creative outlet to grow, learn and have fun. It also came at a perfect time, since we just began our exercise unit of study. The boys and girls have been using the materials to show different ways we can exercise by moving our bodies. \r\n\r\nNext, I am working to expand my reduce, reuse, and recycling unit by incorporating not wasting food and reusing it. They couldn't wait to open the small box and discovered that there were inflatable donuts for the students to sit on while reading. They watched and shrieked with joy as I was inflating the donuts. I then connected the donuts with our current unit of study wheels. They learned some wheels have inflatable tubes like on bicycle tires and car tires. By doing this, they really had a vested interest in the new objects. \r\n\r\nThe students in my class were so excited when they saw the classroom all put together with the new chairs and tables. They love exploring the different materials. \r\nThe materials could not have come at a better time. We were just about to start our building unit of study, when the boxes arrived. I explained to my students that our kitchen is going through a renovation and they were excited to see what was in the boxes. There are pretend tools and building materials for when we do our building study. There are stamps and colorful stamp pads for the children to enjoy writing and practicing their names.
