While our event included some math-based games and activities, this project's heart and greatest impact was centered on building early literacy skills through hands-on, meaningful learning—both at school and at home.\r\n\r\nWith the technology and supplies you helped fund—which may have included items such as a laminator, printer, cardstock, and more—we were able to create durable, colorful materials like alphabet puzzles, name-building games, storytelling prompts, and sight word cards. These tools were used during our Family Literacy Night, where families explored learning stations together and left with take-home kits filled with reusable resources. Many of our donors might think of \"technology\" in terms of screens or apps, but in early childhood, technology like a laminator or color printer is just as powerful. It allowed us to produce high-quality, engaging literacy tools that could be reused again and again—both in the classroom and at home.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for our students was seeing their work turned into something real and lasting. One station allowed children to tell stories using blocks. A staff member wrote down their words, printed them on the spot, and laminated their stories along with a picture of their creation. One child hugged their story and exclaimed, \"I'm going to read this to my grandma!\" That kind of enthusiasm is exactly what we hope for in early literacy. Several students who were typically shy or hesitant to participate lit up with confidence when they saw their names on learning materials or recognized words they knew in our games.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, families left not only with resources but with a renewed sense of partnership in their child's learning. This project created joy, confidence, and meaningful engagement in literacy, laying the foundation for future reading success. We can't thank you enough for investing in our students and making this impactful event possible.","fullyFundedDate":1740767640320,"projectUrl":"project/interactive-literacy-learning-engaging/9019182/","projectTitle":"Interactive Literacy Learning: Engaging Families in Early Education","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. WILLIAMS","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9883081"},{"teacherId":9883081,"projectId":9019170,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, our Preschool Learning Together: Family Engagement Activities project came to life in the most joyful and meaningful ways. With the materials you helped fund, we created vibrant, hands-on literacy and math activities that students could enjoy both at school and at home. One of the most powerful moments was during our Family Literacy & Math Night. Children explored learning stations with their families, building letter puzzles, playing counting games, and listening to stories. Teachers captured children's imaginations and ideas, printed and laminated them on the spot, and gave families beautiful keepsakes to take home—something many said they'd treasure forever.\r\n\r\nWhen the children first saw the materials, their eyes lit up with excitement. One student immediately shouted, \"I can take this home?!\" as she clutched her rainbow fish craft and sight word game. These moments sparked pride and ownership over their learning. The donated laminator and supplies allowed us to create durable, reusable kits for every child, making learning feel special and lasting. We also saw families become more confident in supporting learning at home, which deepened the connection between school and family.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue using these materials in small-group instruction and family workshops throughout the year. Students will build on foundational literacy and math skills by using their take-home materials for storytelling, matching games, and number play. Your generosity has opened the door for deeper engagement, joyful learning, and stronger school-home partnerships. Using the printer, laminator, and colorful paper you helped provide, we created engaging, hands-on literacy kits including alphabet puzzles, sight word cards, and matching games. These materials weren't just used in the classroom—they were the centerpiece of our Family Literacy Night, where families rotated through learning stations and practiced using them with their children.\r\n\r\nOur preschoolers were thrilled by the colorful games and activities, and their excitement grew even more when they realized they could take the materials home. One student who often struggled to participate in group activities was the first to complete the word-matching station—and proudly showed his parents how to play it again at home. The durable materials gave families something tangible to use beyond that night, helping them become active partners in their child's literacy journey.\r\n\r\nWe've already received feedback from families who say their children are now practicing letters and sounds at the dinner table or pretending to be teachers with their siblings. This project not only supported foundational literacy skills—it strengthened the bond between school and home. However, there is something very special about a child receiving a gift that is unexpected yet appreciated. Class 501, received a new large area rug, along with manipulatives and stools. These new tools have become a staple for learning in our classroom. \r\n Many people believe that area rugs are used by early elementary students opposed to upper elementary students. Well, this fifth grade class jumps at the chance to sit and or lay or the area rug. The rug has become an area where students meet in groups, give presentation and is also used as a map due to its display of the continents. In addition, the five stools are also very much appreciated. During our circles time, they are the first seat to be occupied. They also allow us the teachers to meet with groups in narrow spaces. \r\n Overall, the gifts are very much appreciated. They are used daily and are loved by both staff and students. Class 501 thanks every donor for reaching out and giving us new tools for learning.","fullyFundedDate":1733288217112,"projectUrl":"project/money-time/8856031/","projectTitle":"Money Time!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Champion-Taylor","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4774292"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_79","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":249,"numTeachers":22,"percentFrplEligible":91,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":48,"percentWhite":3,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":42,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"11.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":69.7,"schoolId":79,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about PS 149 Sojourner Truth on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"PS 149 Sojourner Truth","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/ps-149-sojourner-truth/79"}
