I have a deep love for reading, and when my students enter my classroom with an aversion to it, I see that as an opportunity for growth and learning.\r\n\r\nReading teaches far more than literacy skills. By immersing themselves in another's life, even through a story, students gain exposure to diverse perspectives and experiences. The art of storytelling nurtures empathy, discernment, understanding, and critical thinking. For this reason, our classroom library is organized by theme rather than genre. Some of our themes include The Art of Growing Up, Stories of Indigenous Cultures, Stories of Those Who Came Before Us, Amazing Nature, and Step Into Another Universe, to name a few.\r\n\r\nThese titles were intentionally chosen to show students that they aren't just reading books about \"school drama,\" but about friendship and the many ways it manifests through choices and consequences. They explore what it means to make difficult decisions, choosing between what feels right and the influences around them. This is truly the Art of Growing Up. Books teach essential life skills that pre-teens need as they navigate our world.\r\n\r\nI have also created a cozy reading corner in our classroom where students can relax with a book, pillow, and/or blanket after completing their assignments. Reading has become student-led rather than teacher-encouraged. One student has already finished the entire Amulet series, while another has been working through the first Harry Potter book since it arrived and has remained committed to finishing it despite its higher Lexile level. Watching students persevere through challenging texts has been incredibly inspiring. They frequently ask throughout the school day if there will be time to read.\r\n\r\nBecause of your donation, our classroom library has become a model for the school, filled with books students genuinely enjoy and want to read. These books now travel with students to recess and the cafeteria, two places where books are rarely found. I truly appreciate what you have provided for my students, and they are incredibly grateful as well.","fullyFundedDate":1758899311295,"projectUrl":"project/plot-twist-our-library-starts-here/9755128/","projectTitle":"Plot Twist: Our Library Starts Here!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Walker","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10277320_orig.jpg?crop=1644,1644,x0,y153&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758675571468","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10277320"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_1038","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":336,"numTeachers":46,"percentFrplEligible":90,"percentAsian":6,"percentBlack":78,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":10,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"7.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":61.0,"schoolId":1038,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about PS 136 Roy Wilkins on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"PS 136 Roy Wilkins","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/ps-136-roy-wilkins/1038"}
