Before your contribution, my calm down corner only consisted of a rug that I purchased last year for my first year of teaching, two blue mats, and another teachers' used bean bag that was flattened from years of wear and tear. I even tried buying fillers for that bean bag and it didn't help it all. With the new bean bag and the reversible sequin fabric, my calm down corner looks revitalized and amazing. This new calm down corner seems to be helping my students to decompress quicker than before. For example, I have a student who doesn't like for you to request him to do anything and tends to get frustrated and tends to harm himself and others. Before the new calm down area, I would try to send him to the calm down corner where nothing would phase him, and his behavior would continue. I can honestly say, that recently when the same student got frustrated and was taken to the calm down corner, he became focused on the sequin fabric. The sequin fabric caught his attention especially once he glided his hands across it. The calm down corner is also being used as an option for choice time ever since the students have taken an interest in it. I have students who have never requested for the bean bag, now asking for it as an option.\r\n\r\nThis is my second year as a teacher, and I work with students with disabilities. Sometimes their behavior can become very challenging, and it can take them awhile to bring themselves back to their regular selves. Currently, with our assistance and prompting, the students can calm down. The next step for my students is to be able to self-regulate. I would like for my students to eventually be able to be redirected to the calm down corner and use them using the necessary tools to calm themselves down without a teacher's assistance. That would be amazing to watch. However, the ultimate goal for my students is to be able to request the calm down corner on their own when they feel that it is becoming a bit too much for them. That would be the ultimate goal. \r\n\r\nI love working with students with disabilities. When I first started here as a paraprofessional, I didn't know what to expect. As time went on, I realize that I enjoy working with students who have challenging behaviors and seeing how I had a hand in transforming these negative behaviors into positive behaviors. Many of these students just need a place that they consider to be safe. Some place where they can go when things get too complicated for them. They need a place where they will not be judged. Thanks to your help, I was able to get this project going. I still have ways to go but this is a great first big step","fullyFundedDate":1738786221849,"projectUrl":"project/calm-down-area/9064740/","projectTitle":"Calm Down Area","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Linda","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9695402"},{"teacherId":9834256,"projectId":8940535,"letterContent":"My students have loved all of the special items from this project! When we received the items, my students were very curious and interested in these items. I allowed them to explore the items as a class and I loved watching them be so excited. So far the most favorite item was the ice cream scooper counting activity. We use this item for counting support during math lessons and my students often choose this item during their choice time after lessons.
