Our wonderful students have been enjoying the new additions and are using them constantly during therapy. Our alphabet rug has kept tiny bodies warm while playing on the floor, given us a comfy crash spot while reading books together, and the alphabet letter pattern is providing a fun way for students to talk about the letters in their names and target sounds we are perfecting. The rolling drawer cart provides a FANTASTIC way for me to organize materials for each week/month by their theme and quick access during sessions. Organizing loose materials (crafting projects, seasonal worksheet projects, visual cues, and small games) has kept our workspace free from extra clutter with no home and helps students focus on the task at hand versus being bombarded with extra distractions. The new toys (car city mat, reusable sticker pads, car ramp) are already being loved as part of evaluations, targeting various aspects of language, and working with target speech sounds in a \"fun\" and functional way.\r\nWhen students first saw our new additions, they were thrilled! Their absolute favorites are the \"Stick Together\" mosaic puzzles. Their second favorites are the 3D puzzles. Kids who don't usually interact are finding connections in the assembly of the puzzles. Last year, many items would find their way to one single kitchen, resulting in students spending valuable class time looking for things. One student wanted to attempt a Baked Alaska.\r\n\r\nI know that some of our students might never use a stand mixer at their homes due to their cost, but having them here in the FCS room means they have access to learn and create. Imagine my surprise when my upper middle schoolers have enjoyed the Tonies as much as the youngest students. Each character has a plethora of activities, songs, stories, and the like on them. There are definitely more favorite Tonies but the interesting thing I have noticed is that these Tonies have increased circulation of the printed books. Some of the books like \"Corduroy\" had been on the shelf untouched for a few years. One child found the book after listening to the Corduroy Tonie. Some of the kids were even teaching others how to play chess. The hockey-like game has been a surprising dark-horse hit. She was just having a rotten day. We were able to visit the treasure chest and talk about memories and how they help us get through the hard days. She selected a small token from the treasure chest that actually reminded her of her grandmother. It was a moment that I will carry with me because the small critter she chose was so much more than a toy.
