Although my students are in seventh-grade, they missed these foundational skills in elementary school and needed to gain experience with them before moving on to seventh-grade standards on proportional reasoning. \r\n\r\nI designed a week-long activity in which my students designed a dream property. They started by measuring our classroom as well as various objects (e.g., desks and chairs) to get a sense of how many feet long and wide rooms and furniture are. They then used LEGOs to lay out a floorplan for their property, and once they could verbally justify the size and spacing of their floorplan to me, they transferred it to grid paper and calculated the area and perimeter of their property. I am uploading a photo I took of two of the dream properties: a set of coffee shops that two friends created.","fullyFundedDate":1725741399043,"projectUrl":"project/getting-a-leg-up-on-learning-with-legos/8741294/","projectTitle":"Getting a Leg Up on Learning with LEGOs","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Day","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9731211"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_47392","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":80,"numTeachers":6,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":100,"percentLatinx":0,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"13.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":100.0,"schoolId":47392,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Plenty Coups High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Plenty Coups High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/montana/pryor-public-school-district-2-3/plenty-coups-high-school/47392"}
