We use them every afternoon during our closing meeting, and the students look forward to taking turns answering questions and sharing information about themselves. These conversations are helping students become more confident speakers, practice listening to one another, and form stronger connections with their classmates.\r\n\r\nThis week, we also began using the notebooks during our Leader in Me lessons, which take place every morning after our morning meeting. It has been so much fun to see how engaged the students are as they reflect, write, and learn about the habits of successful leaders. We have also created a class goal and completed \"I Can Be a Leader\" drawings, while the individual lapboards allow every student to participate during lessons throughout the day. We will continue using these amazing supplies all year as students set goals, track their growth, and develop the confidence to become leaders of their own learning. Because of your generosity, each of my third-grade students has a copy of *North Carolina: What's So Great About This State?* These books have brought our lessons to life as students explore North Carolina's history, geographic regions, landmarks, wildlife, and important state symbols.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom takes place through whole-group instruction, partner discussions, and independent exploration. Students have used the books to practice identifying the main idea and key details, taking notes, and learning from nonfiction text features such as maps, photographs, captions, headings, and diagrams. They also used the books to complete our \"The Place We Call Home\" graphic organizer, which helped them understand how they are connected to their community, Alamance County, their geographic region, and the state of North Carolina.\r\n\r\nThe photographs, maps, and interesting facts have encouraged students to share their discoveries and connect what they are reading to familiar places. We will continue to pull these books out throughout the school year as we deepen our knowledge and understanding of the state in which we live. Students don't simply read a book and move on—we ask questions, discuss new learning, make connections, analyze text features, and use evidence from the text to support our thinking. The sea turtle books provided rich opportunities for students to practice nonfiction reading skills such as identifying main ideas, locating key details, using headings and captions, and learning domain-specific vocabulary.\r\n\r\nMany students were especially excited by the real-world science connections. Students who are naturally curious about animals loved learning about the challenges sea turtles face and were eager to share facts they discovered with their classmates. The combination of engaging nonfiction texts and hands-on science activities helped even reluctant readers become invested in learning more.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments was watching students realize that reading can be a tool for discovery. These books allowed them to become young scientists, researchers, and advocates for wildlife conservation while building their confidence as readers. My students are naturally curious, and they have enjoyed learning how holiday traditions can be different around the world while still bringing families together through shared experiences.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is interactive and discussion-based. Students love hearing stories, sharing their thoughts, and making connections between books and their own lives. Some of the most engaging conversations we've had recently have centered around the Icelandic tradition, with students asking thoughtful questions and sharing their own family customs.
