I want to share a story with you about one of my students and how these toys have changed his ability to communicate. This student is 8 years old and came to my classroom because he was unable and even \"unwilling to even attempt to communicate\". In his previous classroom, they were using a single, 6inch in diameter, augmentative communication button that only allowed him to say one word or phrase which was prerecorded by the teacher. Even with that single selection button, he usually needed hand over hand prompting to activate it. \r\nShortly after entering my classroom, I discovered that he able to do so much more. I worked with him during his breakfast and lunch and got him to use a much more advanced system to independently request \"more\" and \"finished\". From there we started working on expanding vocabulary. He began independently requesting milk, juice, fruit, and other breakfast/lunch related words. \r\nAfter a while, I took pictures of some of the toys we had and uploaded them into his device. He requested the \"keychain pop-its\" hundreds of times in a day. They were his favorite toys. Every once in a while, he might request a musical book. \r\nThen our new toys came! He was SO excited to see them. I took pictures of each of them and uploaded them to his device. In the month or so that we have had the toys, this student now uses his device completely independently to request a variety (10-15) of toys. Not only will he find the toys, but he now is making his requests using 2-3 words at a time. In other words, he will use this device to say, \"play guitar toy\" or even \"play farm Sally,\" indicating a verb and a person he wants to play with. I have been amazed with the progress he has made. I send videos to his mom frequently. She told me the videos mean so much to her because she sees her non-verbal, autistic son, who used to avoid eye contact with anyone outside of family, communicating and choosing to play with other students.\r\nI truly believe that this could not have happened without your donations!","fullyFundedDate":1739991253669,"projectUrl":"project/those-toys-are-older-than-i-am/9060213/","projectTitle":"Those Toys Are Older Than I Am!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Meyer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8602301_orig.jpg?crop=572,572,x297,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1660101329539","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8602301"},{"teacherId":8001431,"projectId":8778638,"letterContent":"Thank you for your support of my classroom.
