However, regardless of which concept we are covering or what unit we are on, literacy skills are key. Many of my students come in as struggling readers and scientific texts can be too challenging and frustrate students, leading to a lack of motivation. \r\nUsing texts like \"Braiding Sweetgrass for Young Adults\" allows me to help students build their skill level and confidence as readers. Furthermore, this particular text appeals to their interest in issues of social justice & students find the text relatable and inspiring. \r\nThis year, my students were inspired to study their local ecologies and present their findings to their school communities.
