So far the kids love the new Playmobil sets, and I anticipate many more hours, days, and years of fun and imagination! I've only put out half of them, but they are definitely some of the go-to toys in our room! There are several reasons I haven't put out more. One is that there are a lot of pieces and each set takes a few hours to assemble. The second reason is that the toys are so engaging that the kids have not gotten bored with the ones that are out yet. My last, and favorite, reason is that they are so well made that they have held up to heavy use. I would say that there is at least one set in constant use during our free choice time, and seeing and hearing the imagination in play has been wonderful!\r\n When I first showed the sets to my students, there was literal cheering from the class! The kids could hardly wait to get their hands on these toys, and that has not changed in the months following! \r\n In the initial project I mentioned my personal experience with these toys and my reason for wanting to stock up! The short version is that my own children loved Playmobil, and spent countless hours playing with various sets. I now have the resources to ensure that my students will also be given the same opportunity, and it is so gratifying to know that! \r\n I am so grateful for both the opportunity to write this project and for those supporters who have provided the funds! Several of the lazy susans are being used in the writing and creating center to hold all of the various supplies. Things like craft sticks, pom poms, ribbon, markers, scissors, stickers, crayons, sequins, tape, pipe cleaners, streamers, and the list goes on! My students love being able to use them, and having plenty of handy places to house things makes it easy to keep everything stocked! Now that we're hitting the holidays we've been able to include some special items and holiday themed goodies (bells, holiday stickers, MORE sequins, etc.) that the kids are really enjoying it! Some of the containers and storage solutions are not being used directly by the students, but they are certainly benefiting from them nonetheless! The fact that I am able to be better organized and have easy access to supplies means that the students are able to have use of them more readily! It has definitely been a win-win for us all!\r\n When we first put out the containers and lazy susans the students went on a creating binge! Making art projects, creating their own stories and books, and just learning about managing supplies has been a huge part of the blessing of having proper places to put and keep things! Now the challenge will be to find ways to keep things re-stocked. Perhaps another DonorsChoose project is on the horizon! For now though we are so grateful for the amazing support!\r\n Currently, we are busy preparing some family gifts for the holidays, but our writing and creation center are in constant demand no matter what the season. Having these storage resources and organizational tools has been a life-saver, and I know they will be we used and loved for many years to come. Because of you, our students now have unicycles to practice with—tools not just for balance but for building confidence, perseverance, and pride as they master new skills. The excitement on their faces when they first saw the unicycles was unforgettable, and that energy has grown into determination each week.\r\n\r\nWe will continue the club throughout the year, challenging ourselves to learn new tricks and preparing to ride in two upcoming parades. With all of the new activities and options, my kiddos have been busier than ever! \r\n To be honest I've been slowly rolling out the new activities as there was so much! The kids have loved the teeter popper balance boards and stepping stones, for outdoor play. There have also been hours of enjoyment from the sensory wooden tool set, the Lego alphabet truck, and the magnatiles! The wooden sensory tool set has found it's home in our sensory table, currently filled with rainbow rice! The kids love to dig, pour, measure, and scoop the rice into, and with, the various containers and tools. The Legos have become integrated with several of our other Lego Duplo sets, and expanded their ability to build bigger and better things! As far as the magnatiles, they are always a fan favorite and tend to be a daily use item with my class! \r\n Many of the other activities, such as the phonic games, magnetic boards and letters, and number matching activities, are more often used as a small group activity with guidance from my aide or myself. These have provided invaluable, hands-on opportunities for my students and have helped develop, and in some cases solidify many of their early learning skills. \r\n Next steps are, as new skills are introduced and practiced, I have puzzles, pattern blocks, and silly putty waiting in the wings to give my kids even more new experiences. Having the ability to give my students so many options for play and hands-on experiences makes me so happy and grateful! I teach TK, which is a hands-on play based program. As you can imagine, any resources which provide literal opportunities for hands-on experiences are just what we need, and how can you get more hands-on then puppets? To say that the students love it would not be an overstatement! It is an activity that is used most days, and often multiple times throughout the day! All students are benefiting from it's use through imaginative play, story retelling, public speaking/performing, and language practice. I have several students who are english learners and I have encouraged them to speak/tell stories in their primary language. This has opened doors and given students opportunities to explore and practice language in a safe way. One girl was not speaking (in english or her native language) in class, but when she uses the puppets she is beginning to express things verbally through play. The students vary their voices to represent different characters, re-tell old favorites, or make-up their own new stories! It is wonderful to witness and see the growth and pleasure students get from playing puppets.\r\n When I first set up the theater and showed the students the puppets there was so much excitement! They literally cheered and couldn't wait to try it out! Since that time it has been a consistently popular activity during free choice. We received a great variety of \"regular\" puppets and finger puppets so there is no end to the creativity being demonstrated!! The time the children spend on coming up with stories or retelling favorites such as Goldilocks and the 3 Bears, or The 3 Little Pigs is just amazing. I also have seen it help students work through things such as difficult situations or emotions, that might have been hard to just \"talk about\" but through puppets they were able to express things and see things from other perspectives that \r\nmay have been more out of reach at their age. I've seen students work through topics such as sharing, kindness, empathy, and sadness. It really has been an invaluable tool and resource in my class.\r\n As far as next steps, I plan to model situations with the puppets and continue to watch and see how students inevitably find ways to use the puppets on their own. It has been such a fascinating and important process and experience for me, and so many of my students, to have this resource available to us!\r\n Again I want to sincerely thank all of my donors for making this project possible in my class.","fullyFundedDate":1732117071418,"projectUrl":"project/imaginary-hands-on-play-with-puppets/8948263/","projectTitle":"Imaginary Hands-On Play with Puppets","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Oxford","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp997799_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1501968169381","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/997799"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_32760","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":319,"numTeachers":15,"percentFrplEligible":79,"percentAsian":6,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":33,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":32,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"21.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":70.6,"schoolId":32760,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Peter J Shields Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Peter J Shields Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/folsom-cordova-unif-sch-dist/peter-j-shields-elementary-school/32760"}
