First, they learned how to use the micropipettes to take precise measurements of samples. Then, they learned the importance of preventing cross-contamination between samples, learning how and when to switch tips on the pipettes, as well as how to best reduce waste and plan out your sampling. \r\nNext, students broke out the Bandit kits. They began by building the circuits with the lights and testing all the materials to ensure they could run power through the system. Then, they set up the mold for the agarose gels, learning how to do measurements in graduated cylinders, read the meniscus, and perform some lab safety procedures. Once the gels were made, the students set up the Bandit system to run electrophoresis, building a larger circuit with all the materials provided. \r\nFinally, students worked in groups of 4 to run an electrophoresis lab using simulated DNA (dye-based DNA). They used the gels they created the day before, as well as the pipettes they practiced using earlier in the week, to take samples of \"DNA\" from a mother, father, and 4 unknown children, and run the samples through the gels and match the unknown children to the mother and father. They learned the importance of taking it slow, practicing, communicating, and teamwork. These students are now fully ready to conduct more experiments in their high school careers to elevate their learning.","fullyFundedDate":1742407287225,"projectUrl":"project/bandit-biotech-for-rural-school-biology/9153199/","projectTitle":"Bandit Biotech for Rural School Biology","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Heckman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9445212_orig.jpg?crop=1555,1555,x0,y67&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1741636240747","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9445212"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_67586","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":258,"numTeachers":15,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":78,"percentIndigenous":6,"percentLatinx":0,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"17.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":83.3,"schoolId":67586,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Pellston Middle High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Pellston Middle High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/pellston-public-school-district/pellston-middle-high-school/67586"}
