As a result, my class of 21 students, both multi-language learners and students for whom English is their first language, are better able to access their literacy materials. They are able to listen to the text being read to them as they read along in their student books. They can listen for pronunciation, tempo, tone, rhythm and rhyme, and voice inflection, all of which supports their fluency. Students of all reading abilities can now access the text. Thanks to your generosity a barrier to learning has been removed and literacy has become more equitable. \r\n\r\nDuring our state standardized testing some students have an accommodation which allows them to have the text read to them. The headphones have met that need. My students are able to test in a quiet environment with the tools they need to achieve their best. \r\n\r\nMy students who are multi-language learners use the headphones to listen to stories as they read along. This helps them achieve fluency with their reading, and also helps them develop their spoken English. When they listen and read along with informational texts they are able to improve their academic English, vital for their success in school and in their future careers. \r\n\r\nThank you for helping to remove barriers and for making education more equitable for all of my students. Your gift will be used year after year, thus benefitting many students to come.","fullyFundedDate":1745975431704,"projectUrl":"project/making-learning-accessible-to-multi-lang/9110704/","projectTitle":"Making Learning Accessible to Multi-Language Learners","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. M. Prior to writing, we were able to break out into book club groups with the books you provided and read great examples of science fiction. The children LOVE book clubs, and some of the ideas that they were exposed to were woven into their own stories. For example, time traveling, technology gone wrong, and living in outer space. \r\n\r\nI have included images from a few of our book clubs. The \"masks\" obscure their facial expressions, but I assure you the students are completely absorbed in their collaborative discussions! Sometimes I suspect they are even having fun! After we finish book clubs, each group always shares a synopsis of their books with the entire class; students are then welcomed to grab a book from a different book club for free-reading time. The most popular book was \"Found\" (sorry-I cannot use italics in this program as I should with the title of a book!) by Margaret Peterson Haddix. \"Found\" is the first book in a series, and one student has already started the second book. Thanks!\r\n\r\nWe just finished sharing our amazing writing on Friday. I am already looking forward to sci-fi book clubs and writing next year!","fullyFundedDate":1739459538790,"projectUrl":"project/exploring-perspective-through-imaginatio/9028319/","projectTitle":"Exploring Perspective Through Imagination: Science Fiction","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Young-Gomes","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8164366_orig.jpg?crop=371,371,x0,y56&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1659496812709","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8164366"},{"teacherId":8164366,"projectId":8754824,"letterContent":"Inclusive (adjective): aiming to provide equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded.\r\n\r\nI love reading books and I bet you do, too! Now, because of your generosity, 20 students in my literacy classes are able to enjoy reading books in their home languages: Portuguese, Spanish and French. You can feel their excitement in the group photo I shared showing the moment they saw the new books for the first time. I had to keep reminding two students to put their books away during class time-they were so caught up in the stories they were reading! \r\n\r\nThe most beautiful memory for me, however, is of the boy who started this quest when he told me he loved reading, but could only read \"English baby books.\" He became obsessed with the Sobreviví (I Survived) series and kicked off a whole-classroom interest in the series. I wish you could feel the happiness in that smile he wears when English-speaking classmates reach out to him, wanting to compare the book he is reading in Spanish with the one they are reading in English. He is no longer reading those picture books that frustrated and embarrassed him; he is included in what his classmates are reading and is a part of the classroom buzz. \r\n\r\nThe kindness that you have shown us will touch students for years to come. The books now fill an entire shelf in our classroom library and have been browsed by students from other grades as well. And I suspect that shelf will continue to expand as our classroom library seeks to include a book for every student.\r\n\r\nInclude (verb): providing a book for every child.","fullyFundedDate":1729631633701,"projectUrl":"project/the-joy-of-reading-without-linguistic-bo/8754824/","projectTitle":"The Joy of Reading Without Linguistic Boundaries","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Young-Gomes","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8164366_orig.jpg?crop=371,371,x0,y56&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1659496812709","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8164366"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_65174","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":340,"numTeachers":33,"percentFrplEligible":64,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":40,"percentWhite":50,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":5,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"10.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":78.7,"schoolId":65174,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Park Avenue Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Park Avenue Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/maine/auburn-school-department/park-elementary-school/65174"}
