It's so exciting to see my students read aloud. I requested these two graphic novels for this school year, so we haven't read them yet. We will be reading both of these graphic novels next semester for Unit 3, extending freedom's reach, and Unit 4, all that glitters. To Kill a Mockingbird will be read for Unit 3, and The Great Gatsby will be read for Unit 4. One of my students wanted to skip units 1 and 2 and asked if we could read The Great Gatsby at the beginning of this school year. So I know my students are excited and interested.","fullyFundedDate":1746785996060,"projectUrl":"project/picture-this-students-reading-with-the/9271048/","projectTitle":"Picture This: Students Reading With the Help of Graphic Novels.","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Bees","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7642735"},{"teacherId":7642735,"projectId":9253383,"letterContent":"My students were shocked when they saw the materials. They couldn't believe it. We've used the dictionaries for vocabulary assignments. My students weren't used to having to look for the words instead of just searching and clicking. It was definitely a different experience for them. I was able to tell them that was how I had to look up every word because we didn't have the internet when I was growing up and in school. \r\n\r\nThe students in my study skills class have been able to use the Spanish English dictionaries to help with their Spanish class assignments. The visuals in the Spanish English dictionaries help the students with comprehension and connecting the two languages. For my English language learners, they have also been able to use it to help them learn and better understand academic English. \r\n\r\nThe next steps for my students are to continue reading Frankenstein, and these dictionaries will help them with unfamiliar words in the story.","fullyFundedDate":1746786017903,"projectUrl":"project/taking-it-old-school-and-defining-words/9253383/","projectTitle":"Taking It Old School and Defining Words Without Technology","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Bees","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7642735"},{"teacherId":7642735,"projectId":9313395,"letterContent":"My students are so impressed with the graphic novels. They said that the Frankenstein graphic novels are like a comic book. The graphics and formatting have really helped to engage their interest in the text. I have read some parts of the text to model reading fluency, and I've also had the students take turns reading aloud. A lot of my students struggle with pronouncing multisyllabic words, so it is a skill that we are working to improve. The formatting of the graphic novel makes reading less intimidating for my students who struggle with reading. The visuals are also helping my students with the comprehension of the story. Thank you again for providing these books and giving my students access to such a valuable resource.","fullyFundedDate":1746785968485,"projectUrl":"project/illustrations-for-the-win/9313395/","projectTitle":"Illustrations for the win!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Bees","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7642735"},{"teacherId":7642735,"projectId":9245256,"letterContent":"I cannot tell you how excited my students were when they saw the books. They immediately grabbed them and flipped through them. My students were so engaged when we read the books because they were able to hold and touch the books. In addition, my students were able to see the pictures in real life. It was so hard for them to be patient and wait because they couldn't wait to find out more about the story. \r\n\r\nThe pictures in the graphic novel helped my students to comprehend the story and helped them with their memory and skill to cite evidence. My students would say how they remembered a particular scene in the story that helped them to find a quote to support their argument for their writing assignment. \r\n\r\nWhile the students I teach have mild to moderate learning disabilities, I also have some students with moderate to severe learning disabilities. These books helped my mod/severe students with identifying characters in the story and emotions of those characters. They were so excited. They started flipping through the books and smelling them. My students said the books smelled new. They were so happy to see characters in color in the graphic novels. \r\n\r\nWhen we read the story together as a class, my students are highly engaged due to the visuals. I will read to the class, and also have students volunteer to read. It has helped them comprehend more complex texts as they have the support of colored visuals! It has made such a huge difference in their learning. Students are following along, turning the pages and answering reading comprehension questions. They are so curious they even look ahead in the book to get a sneak peek of what is going to happen. We have great class discussions about what we read about! \r\n\r\nI also had my students act out a scene from the book, and while they were initially hesitant. The whole class had so much fun. It was a memorable learning experience. It helps the students remember the storyline and understand the characters better. My students also did a timeline activity of key events from the story. I asked them to choose one key event to present in front of the class and explain why they chose that event and why it was important. My students analyzed the character choices and consequences. They wrote a paragraph about it and used the book to help them find an example and a quote (text evidence) to support their assertion. Again, I cannot thank you enough for your generosity.","fullyFundedDate":1744234652385,"projectUrl":"project/becoming-literate-with-graphics/9115334/","projectTitle":"Becoming Literate with Graphics!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Bees","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7642735"},{"teacherId":8839083,"projectId":9060597,"letterContent":"On behalf of Paloma Valley High School and my students, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude for your generous donation of a class set of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. There are not enough work to describe the gratitude that I have for all the supplies and snacks. \r\nThanks to the supplies you provided my students were able to participate in a Valentine's Day activity where they wrote down their names on the construction paper hearts.
