My students loved ending the year by playing review games, and this school year has started the same way. My students thought I was joking when I told them that they were going to learn to play poker, mostly because they associate the game with gambling. I assured them that they would not be gambling, but they were going to learn how to strategize with a team while reviewing mathematics. After the first game, my students understood the goal - have fun, review math, and play a game that makes working together more exciting and purposeful. \r\n\r\nMy students are starting to understand that games add a little stress, which challenges people to focus. By learning to work under a little pressure, students are becoming more prepared for work and in life. Not surprisingly, student athletes have enjoyed playing games in math, especially when we incorporate physical challenges, like who can turn in their answer first, or who can throw a ball into a bucket from the furthest distance. \r\n\r\nI keep thinking of ways to use the materials you provided, which makes me enjoy teaching even more. Students are learning to scan my room to see what we are doing each day, and they get excited when they see the materials you provided. Instead of only learning about anatomy through diagrams and textbooks, students built 3D structures that allowed them to see how different parts of the body are positioned and work together.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments was watching students take what they learned in class and apply it while building their models. They had to problem-solve, collaborate, and refer back to what we learned to determine where different structures belong. Seeing them make those connections while creating something with their own hands made the learning more meaningful.\r\n\r\nMy students were genuinely excited when they first saw all of the materials available for their project. There was an immediate sense of curiosity as they began looking through everything and talking about what they could create. For many of my students, having new materials specifically provided for a hands-on classroom project made the assignment feel special.\r\n\r\nTheir excitement carried over into the project itself. They were eager to begin building and enjoyed having the opportunity to be creative while learning anatomy. It was wonderful to see students who learn in different ways become engaged because they could touch, build, visualize, and discuss the concepts rather than simply read about them.\r\n\r\nAs we continued this project, students moved beyond simply constructing their 3D models and began using them to demonstrate their understanding of the body. They identified important structures, explained how body systems and structures work together to create movement, and connected what they built to concepts we learned in class.\r\n\r\nMy goal was for students to see that anatomy is not just something they memorize for a test, but it is something they can understand, visualize, and apply. We were able to dive deep into problematic societal issues. For instance, I started this project toward the end of the school year when our curriculum focuses on research. We created a list of themes/societal issues that are found in the novel and students chose an issue to research. Students kept on track with reading by completing a weekly dialectical journal. I attached a template for and example.\r\n\r\nWhen I teach through a novel, I like to read the first chapter as a class. After we get into it, two to three times a week, we will begin the assigned reading together as a class by reading a page or two to get students started and then we have a class discussion the follwing day. I've also assigned socratic seminars to assist students with difficult concepts. They do really well with these. \r\n\r\nIt is a struggle in general to get this generation to read much. Because these issues are relevant in today's society, they really enjoy talking about the novel and which character(s) they connect most with. It has made learning fun, and interactive for the students. Students were initially reluctant to use the printing calculators, as it was new to them. However, they quickly warmed up as they saw the information coming to life on paper. \r\n Our first activity was setting up a mock bank, in which students had to interact as customers and banking clerks. You may be thinking that this activity may be antiquated, but it addresses many skills. Such as, communication, waiting patiently in a line, counting money and exchanging money. Providing good customer service and learning how to work under a little pressure while using a printing calculator to add and subtract figures. While providing a receipt. \r\n Our second activity was taking orders from our classroom mock restaurant. Menus were provided to staff and students, and orders were taken. As we closed out the season and locked our beautiful cabinet, the coaches felt a sense of relief that our materials would be safe, clean and organized during our brief off season. \r\n\r\nThe cabinet transformed the space where we keep our volleyball equipment, which made it easier for players to deal with bulky items. Nobody minds going into the storage closet to retrieve equipment as long as they can find it. Now, there is no question where things are located. Our locker mates are also happier now, because they have ample space for their equipment, and it is easier for them to get in and out of the storage area. \r\n\r\nThank you for saving us time, money, and space. Hosting games is fun work, and our cabinet makes our job easier by organizing everything we need for the big day.
