Our students with emotional disabilities are struggling readers. It is often difficult for them to read our middle school grade level textbooks with complex vocabulary concepts. \r\n\r\nThe picture books that you donated in this project are monumental in helping our students understand complex science topics such as natural selection, classification of living things, and geology land forms. The picture books help our students engage with the complex topic by helping them access their prior knowledge in a fun way.\r\n\r\nThese books are used to introduce a topic and then the students have access to these books throughout the unit as they learn the distinct properties that go with each topic. The illustrations are colorful and the language is simple and easy to access. Our classroom is made up of English Language Learners and students with emotional disabilities. They learn in a non-traditional classroom so we don't have a access to a typical middle school science lab. Your generous donation to this project has allowed the fun science labs to come to my students.\r\n\r\nThe paper plates were used last week when students compared chemical and physical changes by observing the reactions of pop rocks candy and zotz candy when water is added. A different class was able to use the plates as a base on which to construct atomic models. A third class demonstrated the phases of the moon with oreos on the plates. They are so versatile and used in almost every experiment we use.\r\n\r\nMy students also were very engaged in using the Plasma Ball in their unit studying energy. The Newton's Cradle helped my students visually understand Newton's Laws of motion.
