Students were shocked to see the boxes of 12 brand new ukuleles, storage stand, tuners, and picks arrive. Several helped me unpack them and set them up after school the day they arrived. My students couldn't believe that someone would donate this much to us so we can play ukulele in class. The very next day, every class got ukulele lessons. This is possible because now we have enough for the entire class to play one at the same time (without having to take turns). All week, we worked on basic chords and can now play many songs. Our favorite activities are the \"ukulele play-along\" videos on Youtube. Their favorite songs are currently \"Thunder\" by Imagine Dragons and \"Riptide\" by Vance Joy. With professional microphones and headphones students are now able to produce high-quality podcasts that showcase their learning, perspectives, and collaboration.\r\n\r\nOne of the most powerful impacts has been watching shy students find their voices. For example, a student who rarely speaks up in class lit up when she stepped behind the microphone. In the podcast studio, she discovered that her ideas mattered, and she gained the confidence to share them with her peers. Moments like this remind us that podcasting is more than just a project—it's a platform for students to shine in ways they never thought possible.\r\n\r\nOur podcast will be shared with the entire school on a monthly basis, covering a variety of topics that are important and relevant to middle school students—from school events and student life to issues that matter to them in their community and the world. This authentic audience gives students a true sense of purpose and ownership in their work.\r\n\r\nYour donation is helping our students strengthen communication, technology, and teamwork skills while also exploring career pathways in broadcasting, journalism, and digital media. Most importantly, it shows them that their voices matter—and that their community believes in them. It is so important that student confidentiality is priority. My EC students should never have to worry about adults or students who are not a part of their IEP team learning about the information in their Exceptional Children's Folder. This folder contains private family information, social development history, assessment data and other vital information collected in order to create an Individual Education Plan. While their many service providers do gain access to the IEP they are never privy to the private and personal information that got them to this point. Due to our LEA not purchasing ink for classroom computers, we have had to print to community printers and then walk to them, sometimes not even on our hallway. Numerous times, due to so many staff printing at the same time, EC paperwork has gotten removed and taken to another classroom, sometimes never returned. This leaves us to wonder how many eyes saw the documents that shouldn't have. In middle school, our students can also read these documents. My special needs students enjoy music class even more than before now that we have these unique instruments. Every student can now participate in music class regardless of ability. When we first unboxed the Boomwhackers, the students were so excited and we got straight to work using them! Over the past several weeks, over 100 students have had the opportunity to use the Boomwhackers for music lessons and special activities. It has been a joy as a teacher to watch students connect with music in a way they hadn't beforehand.\r\n\r\nOne of our favorite activities to do is \"Boomwhacker Play-Along\" videos on Youtube. These are such creative resources! The song plays in the background while colored dots \"fall\" into place on the right beats. The challenge is students have to play their Boomwhacker at the right time, when the \"dot\" crosses the bottom of the screen. This reminds me of Guitar Hero or Dance Dance Revolution (also music games that require matching a tone with the screen). The students agreed their favorite song so far is \"Firework\" by Katy Perry. Before the scanner on my computer desk, It would sometime take hours just to get one document uploaded. My classroom is in the back of the building and often times the scanner on our hall wasn't working or the printer it was attached to was being used. I would waste precious time either waiting for others to finish their jobs or walking around the building to find a working scanner. Using the hallway scanners meant only be able to email the document to myself. From there I would have to get back to my room, open the email, download the document, change its name and then go back in and upload it to the correct program. At 50 years old, I must say that often times by the time I got back to my personal computer I would have been stopped by other colleagues, sent additional emails to review or been sidetracked by other thoughts. What should take less than a minute took an enormous amount of time! Additionally, I am the mentor for a beginning EC teacher who left Walmart to teach. The scanner has been a huge help getting all of her documents uploaded efficiently as well. Thus allowing me to worry less over whether she was getting done what I needed to ensure she got done!\r\nThe headphones have also been a tremendous help! The games have really allowed our students to bond with each other. They also have allowed for some real conversations not only about the game but about what's going on with them in life. It is great to sit and hear them lifting each other up when they make an error in UNO or telling them \"they will beat them next time\" in Guess Who. The students were absolutely ecstatic when all of the materials arrived. They couldn't decide which one they wanted to do first. \r\n\r\nHaving these materials has also allowed for our students, peer helpers, and project unify students to bond over something they all can participate in. The board games has brought more inclusion to our school and it is a wonderful sight to see. Not only bringing bonding to our classroom, the board games have allowed us to get creative with instructional lessons and have more opportunity for learning. I would like to keep creating and finding new ways to incorporate the board games into our instructional lessons. The students have used the pop-out inspirational cards to share with friends that may be feeling down. I have used them as little notes left for my co-workers. The students have been really creative with the foods that they want to try and make such as tamales, macaroni and cheese, and last but not least cake. Having the cooking lessons incorporated into our science and math lessons has been a great way to incorporate real life hands on learning. \r\nOur next step now that we have all the cooking necessities is to start working on preparing a grocery list, going to the grocery store, money handling, and then food preparations by a recipe. Once the the class can familiarize theirselves with some ingredients of common restaurant foods, it will be easier for them to read a menu. This is something that we would really like our students to do. We would like them to be able to independently order their food at a restaurant as many parents have expressed the want for that. Having in class cooking experience, will only help prepare us for going to a restuarant to practice that skill. \r\nNone of this would have been possible without the help from all of you donors.
