I've had the privilege to teach The Outsiders novel 6 times to 6th graders. It is a wonderful story filled with characters who become alive as the book is read. I've watched students find themselves in the characters of the book, evaluate their choices, and vow to make a change in how they perceive others in the future. \r\n\r\nThis year was no different. Thanks to your generosity, my students were quickly invested in the lives of Ponyboy and his buddies. Many discussions were had about how all actions have consequences-either postive or negative. Not all stories are happily-ever-after stories. There is not a knight in shining armour to save the day in The Outsiders; however, the characters are brave and gallant as they face a world that means to destroy them. As the last lines were read, my students took away the lesson that they should be slow to judge and fast to understand. It was an amazing 9 weeks of reading.\r\n\r\nOnce again, thank you for providing each student with a copy of the novel. In the words of Johnny Cade, \"Stay Gold, Ponyboy. My students absolutely love coming to the table and having a place to immediately record their work.\r\n\r\nSo far their favorite activity has been working with positive and negative integers on a number line. Having the table has allowed up to create not only large numbers lines, but coordinate planes with both x and y axis. One goal I wanted to start this school-year off was for students to feel safe making errors in their mathematical thinking; afterall, this is how we learn! I knew if I could create an environment that shows mistakes are welcomed, so much more learning could happen. Thanks to to your donations, I had resources to get this goal started.\r\n\r\nWe began by reading some of the scenarios of math errors in this world that we do not even think about...take time for example. We have had to establish leap years to help balance that a year is technically 365 days AND 6 hours plus. After reading from \"Humble Pi\", my students were shocked at how many truths they thought they knew and came to find out were inaccurate were all due to math errors. The beautiful conversations that took place, however, showed we can look for solution to help fix these and it doesn't make us a \"Failure\", which how many of my students feel when they don't understand math. They feel like they have let someone down (including themselves) and feel there is no turning back once they have learned conceptional thinking incorrectly. Thanks to this book, we realize of everyone had this mindset, we would live a world that doesn't have the technological advances it does today.\r\n\r\nWe also enjoyed using the white boards to work through our math project about impacts math mistakes make. When first starting, they were brainstorming ideas like not baking enough cookies for a party, or simple conceptual error ideas. Since working in collaborative groups, students have more complex thinking not only about the mistakes but HOW the mistake can make a better result. One example is construction of a road project that is a high tourist area. When first thinking about the solution, they only considered the general population. The error of not accounting the tourist recreated their thinking for a new idea. I was excited to see that come out in their thinking!\r\n\r\nA positive math mindset makes all the difference moving into higher math for the next several years with my students. By using a classroom economy reward system, my student's are not only motivated to do their best thinking, but they are learning valuable skills that will help them in their everyday adult lives as they get older.\r\n\r\nOur class tv has helped students have a better visual of math and economy skills we practice in class. One of the first lesson we accomplished this year was learning how checks and debit cards are similar and how they are different. Students practiced \"endorsing\" their class checks and we used their opportunity to have deep conversations about debits and credits, which a a sixth grade math skill when learning about integers. \r\n\r\nTheir favorite activity so far has been using our tv to play \"capture the flag 2.0\" while learning about credits and debits in the real world.
