This book is filled with interesting characters, a mystery to be unraveled, and wonderful figurative language. As our class begins writing our own narrative stories, I've been able to look to the way this author introduces her characters and setting as well as how she uses literary devices like flashback to tell her story. Having a great text to use as an example allows me to teach these skills in context.\r\n\r\nIn addition to the great features I can teach from, I'm finding that this book appeals to both boys and girls in my classroom. This is not true with all fiction. The engagement of all of my students when we are discussing the reading has been so encouraging. They look forward to reading the novel each day.\r\n\r\nThank you again to all of the donors. I feel so blessed each time I submit a project to have it so quickly funded. My students have come up with a great list of character traits to describe one of the main characters.\r\n\r\nWe have also been discussing topics like kindness, compassion, and empathy. It's so wonderful to witness my 10 and 11 year old students evaluating the behavior of one of the characters, and feeling appalled at his lack of empathy.\r\n\r\nMy students love the opportunity to take turns reading the story aloud--even my less proficient readers will volunteer to read!
