The students were absoluetely besides themselves when the sketchbooks and drawing pencils arrived. They all wanted to immediately claim the sketchbooks.\r\nIn class students start with a sketchbook prompt that allows them to quietly sketch using shading, lines to show movement and shadow and hatching and cross hatching and stippling among other techniques.\r\nStudents then come up to the front of the class and show their sketch and use art vovabulary to discuss their art and techniques and elements of art they used. Then students are able to give grow and glow comments. They were intrigued as to why there is rock salt in the art room. The students immediately opened the pipettes and started to explore with paint and paper.\r\n\r\nThe students were also instructed on how to add salt to their art them add watercolor to the salt and observe the reaction. They not only made art they were also doing science. The students then got back to art and did watercolor painting with salt that absorbed the water and pushed the pigment away. They were very excited to open the boxes with the people color pencils and ink pads along with Posca Markers. They immediately took to trying out the multicultural colors to create doodles and characters. \r\n\r\nThe project that incorporated the use of these materials focused on rading books about the diverisity of skin colors and then drawing a world with many different people of different colors with flags from different countries above their heads. Students were particularly engrossed in the book about a robin building a nest. It was interesting to present the book in a book study of sorts where a group of students read the book together then are able to answer questions about book's plot, characters, problem and solution through various art projects. Then students went outside to look for twigs, leaves and brush so that they could make a sculpture of a nest. This made a big difference in the way the art class room flowed. I was not interrupted while working with students on art projects. There is always a read aloud where students participate by reading outloud with peers and also acting out parts of the book. Students then discuss new vocabulary introduced in the books.
