Thank you so, so, so much for the absolutely wonderful woodworking books! They have all arrived, and there are beautiful! Wow! I still cannot believe you fully funded this project for our students! Your generosity is incredible and more deeply appreciated than I can put into words! Thank you!\r\n\r\nOur students are already loving the books you provided! The pictures show some of their first looks at your amazing gift to us. I wish you could have heard their comments! One student said he wanted to use the book to make shelves with his dad. Another was excited to know how to make woodworking joints! We took the books down to one of our woodworking classes so they could be some of the first to see them, and they loved them too! The pictures captured a little of this, but the excitement was so much more than the pictures show! Our fantastic woodworking teacher was also so very happy about the woodworking books you provided. He spent a lot of time looking through them, and he was sharing things from the books that he had built! He is already talking about how they can be used with students next year!\r\n\r\nYou have given such a huge gift - opening a new world of woodworking for so many of our students - and supporting and increasing the skills of those who already do some woodworking! Thank you so much for your incredibly generous gift of these beautiful woodworking books! Not only are they going to be greatly used and enjoyed by our current students, but they will be used by students for years to come! You have brought woodworking to our library and increase that access for our students, and we are so very grateful!\r\n\r\nThank you!!!","fullyFundedDate":1747848868877,"projectUrl":"project/building-readers-and-woodworkers/9343047/","projectTitle":"Building Readers and Woodworkers","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Blosser","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8846663_orig.jpg?crop=2208,2208,x40,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1668884394443","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8846663"},{"teacherId":9466666,"projectId":9207085,"letterContent":"With ever increasing budget cuts, obtaining new materials for our students is a challenge. I still cannot believe that you gave so generously and funded these awesome books for our students! Thank you isn't enough, but we want to thank you profusely! When I told one of our social studies teachers (who teaches Washington State history and had requested books on Washington people, places, and events) what you have done for us, she wrote, \"Well, that makes me smile big time!!\" We are THRILLED to have the Washington-state-topic books you provided!\r\n\r\nStudents helped us unbox some of your new books! They loved it! A few of the pictures show them doing the unboxing. It was really fun to hear their comments. They especially liked the books about Seattle and Mt. Saint Helens! They had a pretty good laugh when they unboxed the Bing Crosby biography because at first, they thought his picture on the back cover was one of the band members from In NSYNC! Our students are really enjoying the biographies! The Kurt Cobain and Macklemore titles have already been checked out! They also loved the Sounders book. As they unboxed it, they were telling stories of times they have seen the Sounders! It was cool too to hear them reading facts to each other as they looked at the book about our Olympic National Park. The Starbucks book was also a big hit, and was snatched up right away!\r\n\r\nWe are so very grateful for your immense support and generosity! As part of our learning, students take a pretest to see what they know as well as what they will need to be able to do. I create videos of myself solving the problems so that students who are struggling with the concepts can watch them and take notes that they can use on the tests. Students also use the videos after the test to prepare for retaking the test if they did not pass it the first time\r\n Your gift allows my students to watch the videos during class time. As you can imagine, having students watching different videos at the same time without headphones makes for a crazy loud environment that is not beneficial to student learning. Your gift allows students to listen to the videos (or other educational videos) without hearing everyone else's videos. The books have arrived, and they are beautiful! They are even better than they looked online! Thank you so much for providing them for our students!\r\n\r\nYesterday, some of our students were able to see, read, and check the out the books your donation provided! While I shared some pictures of this, I wish you could have heard their remarks as they delved into the books! There were such joyful moments! It was really fun to see which books caught their interest first and to hear them share information with their friends and with me. I didn't ask them to do that - they just did it! Some of the comments I heard were \r\n\r\n* \"These books are really nice!\"\r\n* \"I can check this out?!\" (in an incredulous voice - so touching!)\r\n* \"These whales can get up to 60 feet!\"\r\n* \"Some frogs eat ants to help with their protection!\"\r\n* \"Look how close the human heart is to the middle of the chest!\"\r\n* \"Hawking!!!\" (The student was very excited to see about book about Steven Hawking, and then he was even more excited that it was in graphic novel form. Yesterday was truly remarkable because of your generosity. I can't wait for the rest of our students to experience the books you provided too! \r\n\r\nAs part of our library collection, the books you have allowed us to purchase will impact students for years to come! There is something about using whiteboard pens that generates student interest. The non-permanent characteristic of the erasable pens makes students want to try and they are ok making mistakes because they are easy to erase. One of my classes uses the pens to practice their facts at the beginning of class. They roll dice to generate 2 numbers and then use those two numbers to make their fact families for those two numbers. My other classes use them to do their practice work and are even more excited when they get to write directly on their desks.\r\n\r\nWhen the pens came, I waited and opened the boxes with the students. Some students love it. Others heave a sigh as they slog through. As a former librarian-turned-teacher of multilingual learners, I understand the 'love to read' students and encourage the 'sigh-and-slog through it' students. My favorite reminder to those students: If you don't love to read, it's because you haven't found the right book for you yet!\r\n\r\nThose latter students are one reason your contributions and support are especially important. Diverse books make a difference! Diversity in reading level, subject matter, representation (of characters, circumstances, etc, etc) and more is so crucial in the classroom. I want my students to find THAT book that makes them want to keep on reading. I want them to see themselves represented in our books. And I want them to build empathy and understanding through books that portray others who are different from them.\r\n\r\nWe recently learned about WWII and talked briefly about Anne Frank. Through Donors Choose, I was able to have a copy of her story, in Spanish and ready to share. Multiple students have had a chance to borrow the book and read this important story from history in their own language. That is priceless.","fullyFundedDate":1740199772010,"projectUrl":"project/help-bring-diverse-books-to-our-multilin/8942278/","projectTitle":"Help Bring Diverse Books to our Multilingual Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Pen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9466666"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_35744","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":959,"numTeachers":47,"percentFrplEligible":81,"percentAsian":7,"percentBlack":6,"percentWhite":21,"percentIndigenous":3,"percentLatinx":43,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"20.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":69.1,"schoolId":35744,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Olympic Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Olympic Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/washington/auburn-school-district-408/olympic-middle-school/35744"}
