It never gets old and my gratitude never lessens with time or projects. Your generosity is so appreciated.\r\n\r\nSitting Around Creating Community began as an idea to help my students sit more comfortably no matter where they were working and evolved into an indispensable part of our classroom lifestyle. Students regularly work on hard surfaces, including our floor (which is a thin layer of carpet over cement) and tile (a thin layer of vinyl over cement). Even for kids, who are fairly well adapted to discomfort, don't feel great. Enter these cushions, which make assembly floors, class meeting floors, and even garden grass comfortable.\r\n\r\nWhat I didn't expect was that it would also fundamentally change students' comfort and function seated at their own desks. They adjust these cushions in numerous surprising ways: they do sit on them, but they also cuddle them, place them behind their backs, and kneel on them. Students find focus in comfort - their old plastic chairs are less distracting and they can sit for longer, remaining focused.\r\n\r\nYour donation was for cushions. What you gifted my class was comfort, focus, and a sense of luxury most of them are totally unfamiliar with. You've gifted us a sense of a classroom as a home, and there is no monetary value comparable.","fullyFundedDate":1769178132197,"projectUrl":"project/sitting-around-creating-community/9967205/","projectTitle":"Sitting Around Creating Community!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. D'Ambrosio","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10025884_orig.jpg?crop=661,661,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758148589526","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/msdambrosio-op"},{"teacherId":2555494,"projectId":10136257,"letterContent":"Thank you so much, Barbara for donating to our school library. When I first envisioned creating Lego Gardeners, I hadn't realized the massive impact it would have on my students' growth in STEAM, nor on the community-building that would ensue. A small group did a test run with me during a big testing window when many of our students were out of the room. I was shocked by how quickly the small groups organized themselves and their materials, with very little guidance from me. The three groups all approached the process differently but all three were successful with only supervisory work from me. Additionally, students did research about their flower/plant and posted the info card with their finished project in the window in our classroom garden.\r\n\r\nThe next step in our project is the whole class participating in building and researching the rest of the Lego plants that were donated. Students will break into six groups with the six largest plants. They began by sorting the Lego sets into permanent numbered bags and plastic tubs (to make sure that the plants can be deconstructed at the end of the year and stored for next year's students to participate in the Lego Gardeners). Again, the teamwork and excitement around the room as we took even this first step was staggering. Students emerged as natural group leaders, quickly recognizing the value in dividing up the work so everyone had a role to play. \r\n\r\nAs we complete our Lego garden pieces and write up our research cards, we'll be completing the unit with a free build: students will pick a flower or plant not represented in our garden yet and free build the flower in their small groups.\r\n\r\nAs we work in our groups, our work in our school garden has deepened and taken on new meaning. Students are seeking knowledge not only about how to maintain a garden but how plants grow and thrive. Seeing the parts of a plant and building the vocabulary during our Lego builds has led to increased awareness of the real plants around us.\r\n\r\nThank you for bringing this incredible learning and exploring to this year's fourth graders as well as fourth graders in coming years.
