Each new text gives us opportunities to build important literacy skills while keeping students engaged and curious. We practice making predictions, retelling and sequencing events, identifying characters and settings, learning new vocabulary, making connections, asking questions, and using illustrations to deepen our understanding of a story. \r\n\r\nThe read-along books and CDs also give students opportunities to hear fluent, expressive reading and develop their listening comprehension and language skills. For our English Language Learners, this is especially meaningful. Books give students a chance to hear language used naturally and repeatedly, while the pictures and familiar story structures provide important context. We talk about new words, act out stories, notice patterns in language, and use books as springboards for conversations and writing. Students are learning that reading isn't just about decoding words, it is about making meaning, sharing ideas, and connecting with others.\r\n\r\nThe new library has also made it easier for students to see themselves as readers. Some students who were initially hesitant to choose a book now spend their free moments looking through the shelves. Our emerging readers love the picture books, felt pieces, rhyming stories, and read-alongs, while students who are ready for longer stories are thrilled to discover chapter books and collections they can grow into.\r\n\r\nAnd then there are the fish! 🐠 The aquarium has become a surprisingly wonderful part of our reading environment. It gives our classroom a peaceful, calming focal point and adds to the sense that our reading corner is a special place. Students love observing the fish and then connecting what they notice to books about animals, nature, and the world around them. Sometimes the smallest moments like watching a fish swim while listening to a story, become the moments students hold onto most.\r\n\r\nMany of my students have limited access to books outside of school, so having this abundance of books available to them matters enormously. Your generosity has given them something they deserve: choice, access, representation, and the opportunity to experience the joy of getting lost in a good book.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing that books can change a classroom, and that every child deserves a place where their imagination can grow. Through play and creativity, they are building critical thinking, communication, and social-emotional skills that will support them far beyond kindergarten.\r\n\r\nNext, we will continue expanding these experiences by connecting art and dramatic play to our literacy and storytelling units. Students will create characters, design settings, and act out the stories they write together and turning imagination into meaningful learning. Your kindness is not just providing supplies!
