When students can connect with what they're reading, they acquire vocabulary, sentence structures, and cultural knowledge naturally—much like how we all learned our first language.\r\n\r\nTo support this, I've introduced free voluntary reading time once a week, with plans to expand it as the year goes on. During this time, students choose what they want to read, which fosters both autonomy and motivation. The classroom library includes a wide range of options: novels, magazines, nonfiction texts, travel guides, science books, stories about sports, and even picture books. This variety ensures that every student can find something accessible and interesting. Thank you for providing such a wide range of options for my students.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom looks joyful and individualized. Students get comfortable and immerse themselves in their chosen texts. For some, it means paging through a magazine about soccer; for others, it's diving into a novel or exploring a nonfiction book about animals or space. Because students select texts that match their interests and proficiency levels, they're more engaged and confident.\r\n\r\nThese moments are exactly what the theory of comprehensible input predicts: when students are motivated and understand what they read, language learning happens naturally, and joyfully.","fullyFundedDate":1746787389818,"projectUrl":"project/unlock-a-world-of-french-adventures-fun/9299974/","projectTitle":"Unlock a World of French Adventures: Fund Our Classroom Library!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Duncan","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6532853_orig.jpg?crop=2681,2681,x171,y40&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1729539931136","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6532853"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_48995","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1778,"numTeachers":119,"percentFrplEligible":31,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":7,"percentWhite":70,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":13,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"14.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":60.9,"schoolId":48995,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Olathe South High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Olathe South High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/kansas/olathe-public-schools-usd-233/olathe-south-high-school/48995"}
