They got to dive into the chemistry of what was occurring as the beads were made as well as the chemistry we were using to measure and observe the outcomes of photosynthesis itself.\r\n\r\nPhotosynthesis as a process is hard for students to visualize since it is happening inside the cell. This lab gave them observable, reliable results. One standout moment came during a sight-reading activity when students worked in small groups to notate a rhythm they heard, then held up their boards for instant feedback. The ability to write, erase, revise, and try again encouraged risk-taking and collaboration in a way paper worksheets never could.\r\n\r\nFor our next steps, students will use the boards to compose short melodies and rhythmic patterns tied to our current unit on musical form and harmony. They will notate, perform, revise, and share their work with peers, using the boards as a bridge between theory and performance. Students see how reading and writing became acts of liberation and how language was used as a tool to challenge dehumanization. Harriet Jacobs's \"Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl\" offers a perspective that is often absent from traditional historical accounts: the experience of enslaved women. Through Jacobs's narrative, students confront the intersections of slavery, gender, family, and sexual exploitation.\r\n\r\nEngaging with these first-person accounts encourages students to think critically about whose voices are represented in historical narratives and whose have been marginalized or silenced.
