I am sorry it took so long for this letter to be posted, but I really wanted you to know how much positive impact this project has had on our students. I knew we couldn't justly explore this entire series in the short month of May. \r\n\r\nI started this year off with the book Aaron Slater, Illustrator with my primary students. This book went well with my lesson about the difference between authors and illustrators. In the intermediate grades, after reading this book, the students researched Norman Rockwell, Eric Carle, Jerry Pinkney and Dav Pilkey. This research led to the students checking books out that were illustrated by these individuals. \r\n\r\nWe just finished the book, Ada Twist Scientist. The primary students were learning about \"smell words\", based on the experiments made by Ada in the book, and in their classroom. The classroom teacher was very excited about the collaboration between reading and science with this story. The intermediate grades are using this story as a starting point to learn about other famous scientists. They are learning how to locate reliable information using databases instead of random websites. \r\n\r\nNext week, we will be reading Iggy Peck, Architect, and I am sure this lesson will be a winner as well. Primary students are going to build a tower made from marshmallows and toothpicks . The fourth grade students will be learning about famous bridges including the Golden Gate, Tower Bridge , Tacoma Narrow Bridge, and why our very own Francis Scott Key bridge failed. The fifth graders will be exploring information about some famous architects like Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Henry Sullivan.\r\nI am displaying the books as we read them, so they are always ready for the next reading adventure. This series has sparked interest from students in our biography section as well. I have even learned some interesting facts about the people they have researched. Sharing information is so important!\r\n\r\nOnce again, thank you, Optimum, for providing us with these resources.
