The struggle with mental health in elementary school is very real and with cuts to school based mental health services, school counselors have to be creative with resources and materials. Many of the resources I find online must be printed for journals, group work and self reflection. What isn't free is the ink needed to print these materials. It was my first experience with Donors Choose, and I knew that it was going to be a donation that would make our science standards truly applicable for my students. When the package was delivered, I did not hesitate to share the news with my students the following day. I unboxed the weather station, and gasps and \"That's cool!\" were exclaimed from around the room. I explained how it was donated to the school and our class so that we can get a firsthand experience with weather tools and making predictions. \r\n\r\nThe initial usage of the weather station was as a review tool. Again, my students had been learning about different factors that affect weather, tools and how these forms of data can help predict the weather. However, before we can use it, they had to understand the built-in tools, what data could be collected with the tools and what weather could be expected. As a class, we spent time going through each visible tool and discussing the name and its job. I explained how the tool collects the data and sends the information to the tablet. This will allow us to easily see and track changes. \r\n\r\nWhat's next? Applying the science standards to this tool. Using real-world tools firsthand, tracking the data and using it to make predictions about our local weather. As a fifth grade class and school, we are excited to have our own weather station in our \"backyard,\" and that could not have been possible without your donation. With some WiFi, instructions and a whole lot of technology patience, our weather station will be in operation in no time!
