This hands-on experience allowed students to see how ingredients can change from one state of matter to another while creating a delicious dessert. Students were excited to participate, ask questions, make predictions, and observe the changes that happened throughout the process.\r\n\r\nBefore making the ice cream, we discussed the three main states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases. Students identified the ingredients we used, such as milk and cream, as liquids. They noticed that the ingredients could be poured and took the shape of the container. We then talked about how temperature can cause matter to change. When liquids are exposed to very low temperatures, they can freeze and become solids.\r\n\r\nWe also connected our ice cream activity to the water cycle. Students reviewed how water can change from a liquid into a gas through evaporation and then cool into tiny droplets through condensation. We discussed how water can freeze when temperatures become very cold. For example, rain can freeze into snow, ice, or frost. Students were able to relate this idea to the ice cream mixture because both water and the ingredients in our dessert changed when they were exposed to low temperatures.\r\n\r\nThe activity also gave students an opportunity to use important science vocabulary, including solid, liquid, gas, freeze, melt, temperature, and change of state. Students practiced explaining what they observed using complete sentences. They shared their predictions about what would happen to the liquid mixture and described the changes they noticed after it froze. This supported both their science learning and their speaking and listening skills.\r\n\r\nLearning through a creative activity such as making ice cream helped students see that science is all around them. \r\n\r\nMost importantly, students had fun while learning.
