The great thing about this project is that it is long term - students will benefit and learn from it for years to come. It is still early in the life of this project - one that involves a bird feeding station, so it was first important to wait till it was the normal season to feed birds in the state of Iowa. As an enrichment teacher, I get to work with students from several grade levels, and I've worked to make this a multiple age project. At this point, I have a student leadership team that has gotten the feeding station set up. They were quite excited to see the different feeder types. We spent time learning about the most appropriate feeds for each feeder type, and the differnet birds that each might attract. I didn't realize how excited 10 and 11 year olds could get about birds! This leadership group has also scripted out an appearance on the morning announcements where they informed the whole school about the feeder station and the intention to observe it and participate in Project FeederWatch. They continue to monitor the feed levels and we have begun to learn different types of birds common to feeders in Iowa. I am excited to see this project continue to grow and evolve. WIth younger students in the leadership roles, this is a project that can continue on as more students are trained.
