The students are loving the new materials, especially the cork blocks. One unexpected use for the blocks was being able to connect with our math learning and compare the weight of the cork blocks with the weight of our wooden blocks. It gave us the opportunity to talk about materials and the reasons we might want to use cork blocks instead of wooden blocks. Students talked about how when they build something tall they will use the cork blocks so they won't hurt someone or make a loud noise if the building falls down.\r\n\r\nThe students have also been using the felt playmats to elevate their animal play. They have been talking about how different animals live in different places. And have also been incorporating the blocks into the play to build shelters for the animals. One student who speaks very little English has been particularly interested in using the playmats to sort animals, and has been engaging in more play and communication with his peers.\r\n\r\nThese materials have sparked curiosity and creativity in our students.
