While the goal of the project is still in progress (we are collecting data across an entire year), the students have learned so much about the different birds in our ecosystem, and they have also learned essential life skills and collaboration techniques, which was an unexpected but delightful outcome. \r\n\r\nStudents have yes-named all of the birds- which has been a very funny and creative experience. Some have made \"hello, my name is...\" face cards for the birds with their names and picture so that visiting teachers and students can address the birds \"correctly.\" They love observing which birds visit in the morning vs afternoon, who travels with a partner or mate, different colorations of different bird genders for the same species, which birds sing, which ones are bullies to other birds when it comes to food, the list goes on. Our favorite bird, an oriole we named Banana, has since migrated for the winter months. He had a morning routine where he would come by and aggressively peck at the glass at students, demanding his orange for the day. Students set up their own system to make sure Banana got his orange every day. You can imagine their devastation when he left for winter. \r\n\r\nStudents also came up with their own system of being able to take turns feeding the birds and refilling or cleaning out the feeders- they all wanted to be involved. This was a beautiful milestone to witness them coming together as a community to take care of \"their\" birds. \r\n\r\nThis project has become such an impactful highlight in the past few months, and I am even more excited to see how students react to and represent our long-term data findings when the birds return in the spring. Thank you so much for making this experience possible for them.","fullyFundedDate":1746740951905,"projectUrl":"project/local-bird-biodiversity/9235581/","projectTitle":"Local Bird Biodiversity","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Conover","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9932579_orig.png?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1744041657651","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9932579"},{"teacherId":4988177,"projectId":8868713,"letterContent":"I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for the incredible tools and activities you provide to support our mental well-being. In a world that sometimes feels overwhelming, the simple yet powerful gifts you offer—like sand gardens, ant farms, magic wands, and books—make such a difference in helping us navigate middle school.\r\nWe'd like to share our appreciation for sand gardens. These miniature landscapes, with their calming patterns and soft grains, offer a unique way to release stress and focus our minds. The act of raking the sand into swirls and shapes feels like a quiet meditation, giving us a chance to reflect, breathe deeply, and find peace. Whether it's during a hectic school day or a moment of frustration, the sand garden is always there, inviting us to let go of worries and embrace a sense of calm.\r\nAnt farms are another incredible gift. They may look small, but they are full of life and endless lessons. Watching ants work together as a team, building tunnels and carrying food reminds us of the importance of cooperation and perseverance. These tiny creatures show us that no task is too big when everyone works together. Ant farms are not just science experiments, they are windows into a fascinating world that inspires curiosity and a sense of connection to nature.\r\nAnd thank you for the magic wands? While they may not cast real spells, magic wands have a way of lighting up our imaginations. They remind us to believe in possibilities and to embrace the magic within ourselves. Whether we're using them to pretend we're wizards or simply holding them as a reminder of hope, magic wands bring a spark of joy to our days.\r\nFinally, the drawing books are amazing! Books are more than pages and words; they are doorways into to the world of drawing what we see. They allow us to escape, learn, dream, and grow. They teach us not only how to create scientifically accurate illustrations but also empathy and give us the courage to be ourselves.\r\nTo everyone who helps provide these mental health supports, thank you for making our lives better. You show us that taking care of our minds is just as important as taking care of our bodies.","fullyFundedDate":1738197917216,"projectUrl":"project/keep-calm-science-on/8868713/","projectTitle":"Keep Calm & Science On!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. S.","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4988177_orig.jpg?crop=378,378,x0,y1&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1728494329149","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4988177"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_23581","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":389,"numTeachers":44,"percentFrplEligible":76,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":66,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":17,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"8.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":69.0,"schoolId":23581,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Newark Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Newark Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/newark-central-schools/newark-middle-school/23581"}
