We all laughed at parts and shared some deep discussions about other parts. We wrote \"found poems\" using only words from the story to express the feelings of our main character, and we participated in a student-led discussion we call a Socratic Seminar that truly amazed me at the depth of thought these 11 and 12 year olds were sharing with one another, entirely unprompted by me. \r\n\r\nMy goal for reading novels with my students is to develop in each of them a love for reading. So, I always encourage them to find a comfortable space somewhere in my room in which to read. Some of their \"comfortable spaces\" make me laugh, but I love to see them enjoying that time together. Even my most reluctant readers were completely engaged by this story. \r\n\r\nOur final project is to write an essay answering the question, \"What does it truly mean to be gifted?\" To summarize the responses from all of them: everyone has a gift, even if it looks completely different from everyone else's gift.
