On the surface, these items may seem minor or easily overlooked. However, after working in an elementary school, it becomes clear that there are many seemingly small needs that have a significant impact on a child's daily experience, learning, and overall well-being. These are things that may not stand out until they are witnessed firsthand.\r\n\r\nAs mentioned in the original project description, this request was intentionally focused on addressing factors that affect students' mental health and their ability to concentrate and learn throughout the school day. For a child, arriving at school or experiencing the day in clean, dry, and comfortable clothing can remove a tremendous amount of stress and worry. When children are not distracted by embarrassment, discomfort, or fear of being noticed by peers, they are far more able to focus on what truly matters—learning, participating, and growing in confidence.\r\n\r\nAccording to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from studies conducted in 2022–2023, mental health conditions among elementary-aged students are increasing. In this research, approximately 10% of students were identified as experiencing anxiety. Based on our own observations at school, concerns related to bathroom accidents, torn clothing, and stained or wet clothing are common stressors, particularly for students who already struggle with anxiety. For these children, simply knowing there is a safe, supportive place where they can receive clean clothing and return to their day without attention or judgment can greatly reduce anxiety and help them regain a sense of normalcy.\r\n\r\nThe impact of your donation can be seen clearly through the following examples:\r\n\r\n *Student A has a medical condition that occasionally causes her to wet her pants. Because she knows that clean clothing is available when needed, she feels more confident and significantly less fearful of being teased or singled out due to odor or visible stains.\r\n *Student B experienced a wardrobe malfunction when a pair of pants split at the seam during the school day. Thanks to having extra clothing available, the student was able to change and return to class quickly, without missing instructional time or waiting for a parent to arrive.\r\n *Student C came to the office feeling upset after being splashed on the way to school, leaving their clothing dirty and uncomfortable. Providing clean clothes allowed the student to return to class feeling relieved and confident, without losing valuable learning time.\r\n *Student D came into the office embarrassed after realizing too late that he had soiled his pants. Because replacement clothing was readily available, he was able to change discreetly and continue his day with minimal disruption.\r\n *Student E arrived at the office feeling uncomfortable after realizing her shirt was partially see-through. Having an extra shirt on hand resolved the issue immediately and spared her further embarrassment.\r\n\r\nFor each of these students, there was an opportunity to address a potentially distressing situation quickly and compassionately. By meeting these basic needs, we were able to return students to the classroom with minimal disruption, preserve their dignity, and ensure they could refocus on learning. Your support directly contributes to creating a school environment where students feel safe, supported, and ready to succeed.\r\n\r\nIn summary, with the help of our amazing donor we are helping to fill our shelf with clothing to help with the scenarios above (and more) they are helping our entire school!","fullyFundedDate":1763679154832,"projectUrl":"project/extra-clothing-at-school-causes-less-emb/9857699/","projectTitle":"Extra Clothing at School Causes Less Embarrassment When Accidents Happen","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Rosek","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10248370"},{"teacherId":9637156,"projectId":9260409,"letterContent":"On behalf of our 5th-grade team, I want to thank you for your generous support of our DonorsChoose project, \"Cultural Books.\" Because of your kindness, each of our seven teachers received seven student copies of four different culturally rich books. These sets allow more students to have the text in their hands during genre-based writing time, making it easier for them to reference, analyze, and draw inspiration for their own writing.\r\n\r\nBefore your donation, each teacher only had one copy of each book, which made it difficult for students to reference the text while working on their writing projects. Now, with multiple copies in students' hands, teachers can guide them more effectively, and students can revisit the books as they write, cite examples, and build their skills with confidence.\r\n\r\nThese books are already making a difference. They provide students with mirrors to see themselves, windows to explore the experiences of others, and sliding doors to step into new perspectives. Our students light up when they see characters and experiences that reflect their own lives, and they are equally curious and engaged when introduced to new cultures and ways of thinking.\r\n\r\nYour generosity didn't just put books in classrooms—it put opportunities for deeper learning directly into the hands of our young writers. Thank you for supporting our teachers, our students, and the power of literature. These tools will enhance their learning experience and make the process more enjoyable and meaningful. Students will use the index cards to create a review pack of morphemes to help them build their vocabulary.
