We have materials for DNA extraction and gel electrophoresis. We captured pictures of students doing forensic studies including preparing gel cassette, pouring gel, and running PCR.\r\n\r\nThe students were surprised that we were going to do new and exciting experiments. The students were most fascinated with the PCR machine. They were able to see equipment used in major laboratories.\r\n\r\nThe next step is to modify and extend the labs. There were some items missing that we need to do further experiments, but we are so grateful to our donors. Thank you so much for your incredible contribution. My students got to experience the excitement of biotechnology firsthand by extracting DNA from strawberries. It was such a fun and eye-opening activity. Using the new materials, like test tubes, pipettes, and the extraction solution, they were able to see the DNA with their own eyes, which made the concept of molecular biology come alive. It's one thing to read about DNA in a textbook, but it's a whole different experience to actually pull it out of a strawberry.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials arrived, the students were thrilled. They were amazed at how professional everything looked and couldn't wait to get started. As we worked through the activity, their faces lit up when the DNA started to appear. One student even said, \"I had no idea science could be this cool!\" It was a moment of discovery for many of them and made them feel like real scientists.\r\n\r\nNext, we're planning to build on this excitement by exploring DNA in other organisms and diving into how biotechnology can help with real-world problems like medicine and agriculture. This project has inspired so much curiosity and confidence in my students, and I'm so grateful to our donors for making it possible. It's been such a meaningful way to show them that science is not only fun but also something they can see themselves doing in the future.","fullyFundedDate":1731885443780,"projectUrl":"project/biotech-lab-explorers-hands-on-biotechn/8906781/","projectTitle":"BioTech Lab Explorers: Hands-On Biotechnology for Future Innovators","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Taborada","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9818055_orig.jpg?crop=4284,4284,x0,y1128&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1730252905666","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9818055"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_6418","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":557,"numTeachers":39,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":75,"percentWhite":14,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":6,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"14.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":37.0,"schoolId":6418,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Mullins High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Mullins High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/south-carolina/marion-county-school-district/mullins-high-school/6418"}
