Even the reusable water bottles have made our classroom routines smoother and healthier!\r\nYour support has not only provided materials but has also inspired excitement and curiosity in our students. It seemed that more and more kids were telling us that they didn't enjoy reading. As avid readers, we struggled to understand why kids didn't love to read. After the pandemic, the scores were even lower. When we asked the kids why they weren't reading, we found that they were reading books over and over that weren't at their level. On average, kids were reading books that were at a third grade level instead of a fifth grade level. They felt comfortable with these lower-level books. Throughout the pandemic, kids were finding information online and it was easy. They didn't experience collaborative group work and productive struggle.\r\n\r\nWe decided that we wanted to start book groups in our classroom. Giving the kids read-to-self-time isn't cutting it. The kids are reading, but they aren't finishing books. They aren't challenging themselves and they aren't falling in love with reading. We went through our book group library and there have been no new books purchased since I started working here 13 years ago. Even more, most of the books are at a lower level than fifth grade. We wanted to purchase some engaging, current books to use with book groups in fifth grade. And, we decided to focus on getting books that are the first in a series or part of a series to encourage kids to keep reading.\r\n\r\nSince we started book groups, our students have gone from uninterested and a bit apathetic about reading, to being excited to read and devouring books! We have found that our avid readers love the books. But, the more kids talk about our books, the more ALL of our kids want to read them! Our book clubs are so successful that our librarian asked us to stop for a bit so more of our kids would check out books at the library! At my school we use the Accelerated Reader program, which allows the students to take comprehension quizzes on books they read, and then the number of words in that book is added to their word count. Each 5th grader is challenged to read at least a million words during the year. Right now, our 5th graders have read a combined total of over 45 million words! We will continue adding to our book club library and nurturing the love of reading in our classrooms thanks to your generosity","fullyFundedDate":1733610112418,"projectUrl":"project/reading-books-together-makes-reading-fun/8846558/","projectTitle":"Reading Books Together Makes Reading Fun!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Lund","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9180827_orig.jpg?crop=2048,2048,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1692569177477","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9180827"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_55456","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":373,"numTeachers":24,"percentFrplEligible":37,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":70,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":11,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":81.8,"schoolId":55456,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Mullenix Ridge Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Mullenix Ridge Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/washington/south-kitsap-school-district-402/mullenix-ridge-elementary-school/55456"}
