As a third-year teacher, I am thrilled to be teaching first grade for another year. My teaching journey has truly come full circle. I had the incredible honor of teaching the same group of students for three consecutive years—first as a student teacher in first grade, then as their long-term substitute in second grade, and finally as their third-grade teacher. Last year, I returned to first grade, the grade where I first discovered my love of teaching. This year, I am excited to create those same meaningful memories with a new and wonderfully diverse group of first graders, including students with a variety of learning needs and individual learning plans.\r\n\r\nYour generous donations are helping us create a time capsule filled with pieces of what makes first grade so special. The water bottle stickers, mini resin animals, colorful paper, and fidgets are giving students fun ways to personalize their projects and choose items that represent their interests and personalities. Students are excited to create drawings, write letters to their future selves, and include special keepsakes that capture who they are right now. Watching their excitement as they choose their materials and imagine opening their time capsules years from now has been such a special classroom moment.\r\n\r\nThis project is about so much more than putting items into a container—it is about helping children recognize their own growth and understand that the little moments of childhood are worth remembering. Our next steps are to finish our letters and drawings, reflect on what we have learned and accomplished, and carefully seal our time capsules to be reopened when students graduate in 11 years. I hope that when they open them as graduates, they will smile at their first-grade selves and remember the classroom where they began their journey. These new books give every student an opportunity to find a text that feels just right for them while also encouraging them to stretch their skills. As students read, they are building phonics and decoding skills, developing vocabulary, strengthening fluency and comprehension, and learning how to talk about books and make connections. Most importantly, they are learning that they are readers.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom happens every day through independent reading, partner reading, small-group instruction, read-alouds, and opportunities to share favorite books with classmates. I have already seen how excited students become when they find a book that interests them or one they can read successfully on their own. For developing readers, that feeling of \"I can read this!\" is incredibly powerful.
