At the end of the 1st semester, many of my students sat in the bean bag chairs, felt the soft carpet, and practiced different techniques to get ready for daily activities. These items will be used everyday of the school year\r\n With the blue carpet, blue bean bags, and fish tower, I created a peaceful beach scene. Selfishly, I love ocean themes and often visualize being at the beach when I feel overwhelmed or anxious. I often model how to control my breathing, use visualization tactics, and positive self talk to overcome minor setbacks with my students. \r\nI allowed students to sit in the calm area to retake tests without having the distraction of their classmates, which resulted in improved I-Ready Assessment scores. A few second grade boys used the calm area to get caught up on missed math assignments. \r\nSome Kindergarteners used puppets in a social story about being at a \"pool party\" on the blue carpet. I also had school adults sit in the area to calm their bodies after a stressful day.\r\nThank you for your continued support with the Donorschoose program. Many of my fellow teachers have been gifted items needed for creating a positive school environment that is welcoming to all. We will continue to use the calm area in multiple ways.","fullyFundedDate":1759451402127,"projectUrl":"project/calm-corners-to-reset-our-brain/9776681/","projectTitle":"Calm Corners to Reset Our Brain","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Arensdorf","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5946822_orig.png?crop=301,301,x23,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1741730044155","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5946822"},{"teacherId":2133270,"projectId":9772235,"letterContent":"Because of your support, we successfully built five comprehensive manipulative kits for every classroom. These kits have transformed our math instructional time, allowing students to move from abstract ideas to concrete discovery.\r\n\r\nWe are currently using the kits to facilitate Math Rotations and help struggling students grasp concepts better. With five kits per room, teachers can lead a focused \"Guided Math\" group where every student has their own set of tools. Teachers have also allowed students to grab the kit when they need it.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, we had a team organize the materials into packets, the excitement from the team was palpable. As the materials reached the classroom, the students were wide-eyed; one Kindergartener asked, \"Are these toys for us to learn with?\" There is a new sense of ownership and pride in the classroom. Because the kits are organized, the students have been incredibly diligent about \"kit hygiene\"—making sure every cube and counter is returned to its correct slot so the next group can use them.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to see these tools being used independently during assessments, giving students the ability to be as successful as they can be. Teachers are being reminded that using these tools during an assessment is acceptable, we are not measuring a students memorization, we are measuring their understanding.\r\n\r\nThese kits have provided the foundation for a much more interactive, joyful year of learning.
