Instead of giving children a model to copy, we invited them to create something from their imagination. Children layered bleeding tissue paper to explore color mixing, used masking tape to design roads and shapes, and added pom poms, feathers, and buttons to build textured collages. One small group even collaborated to create a bird sanctuary, carefully selecting materials to represent nests, trees, and eggs.\r\n\r\nThe drying rack and marker stand have strengthened independence in our classroom. Children now access materials on their own, make thoughtful choices, and proudly place their finished work on the drying rack. The art center truly feels like a studio space where creativity, problem solving, and confidence are growing every day.\r\n\r\nTheir excitement was immediate. As we unpacked the supplies, children leaned in with wide eyes, already sharing ideas about what they could create. They eagerly sorted pom poms by color, examined the feathers, and asked thoughtful questions about how the tissue paper would change when wet. The biggest moment came when they saw the drying rack. One child proudly said, \"Now we are real artists!\" Having organized, accessible materials and a special place for their masterpieces sent a powerful message that their work matters. For many of our students, access to abundant art materials is not guaranteed outside of school, so this experience felt both joyful and empowering.\r\n\r\nWe are beginning a Community Helpers project, and the art center will be central to this exploration. Students will design and build representations of places in our community such as fire stations, bakeries, and libraries using collage materials, tape engineering, and mixed media techniques. Through this work, they will strengthen fine motor skills while deepening their understanding of the world around them. As we move forward, children will also dictate stories about their artwork, connecting visual expression with language and literacy development. Thanks to our donors, our art center is no longer just a table with supplies.
