The addition of the 3D printer has brought an element into the classroom that doesn't require drawing or coloring and for some students that can be a welcome relief. Not everyone has the skill, patience, or fine motor skills required to be a confident artist, but while using the 3D print software that doesn't matter. I have had several students do extra projects just because they love to design on the software program and they enjoy watching the printer run during class. We have already used a whole spool of filament on their designs. \r\n To start, I walk students through the software by creating a keychain with their name on it together. They learn how to add shapes, change sizes and measurements, and use all the buttons and tools. Then I print the keychains as they watch. Sometimes they have missed a step and things don't turn out quite right, I do not correct these mistakes, they have to go back and fix it and then reprint on their own. After completing the initial keychain project they are allowed to create one more item of their choice, if they aren't interested in the process they can \"donate\" their item to someone else... I have one fourth grader who has designed four different spinning tops with this method. He's trying to see which design will spin the longest. I also devote a class period to discussing how this machine and software can be valuable in the working world. We have created parts for some teachers and a custodian at this point and the kids are so proud of themselves, they constantly look for new projects to use with the printer.
