I help to run social skills groups from grades K-8 so some of the 8th graders in my groups I've known since they first arrived at our school. Our social groups used to run in an obscure room with plastic tables and desk chairs, and we were happy to have them! This year, along with the couches that I've scoured off of Craigslist, you've donated bean bags, books, and fidget toys so that the students can enjoy fidgets and relax during groups which is essential for the act of sharing. Instead of sitting in desks and chairs like they do all day long, they get to stretch their legs, let their minds and bodies relax, and take a little bit of weight off of themselves during their long days. It's hard enough to learn and share things that are sometimes uncomfortable, much less do them in a way that doesn't suit openness and relaxation. We've also began to implement drumming into our routines. It's minimal right now but I'm hoping to include the music teacher in my planning. It's a wonderful way to do introductions, farewells, and incorporate into sessions for prompts, emotional release, and a lovely way to reset before transitions. Through your donations, kids can keep their hands busy (which can be really tough for some of them!) and also activate areas of their brains not usually stimulated during talk sessions.
