Having the owl pellets to dissect was a huge game changer in terms of hands on learning and engagement for my students. Every student was fully engaged in figuring out what was in their owl pellets. They were curious, asked questions, made connections, and collaborated.\r\n They were beyond excited to open the pellet to uncover the contents. I could hear students excitedly announce what type of bone they found in the pellet. After sorting the bones, they were able to see the anatomy of rodent. They uncovered a real life food chain.\r\n After we learn about how ecosystems become unbalanced, my students will be creating an action plan to help an animal in an ecosystem that has been negatively impacted by humans.","fullyFundedDate":1757683105860,"projectUrl":"project/exploring-food-chains-in-stem/9597911/","projectTitle":"Exploring Food Chains in STEM","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Becher","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9281576_orig.png?crop=273,273,x0,y3&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1694875103172","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9281576"},{"teacherId":8884482,"projectId":8889922,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your thoughtful donations of cushions and books! The addition of What Is Climate Change? and I Survived Hurricane Katrina has truly enhanced our science unit on weather and climate. These books not only captivated our students but also provided them with essential lessons in critical thinking, problem-solving, and resilience. Through I Survived Hurricane Katrina, students explored the impact of extreme weather on individuals and communities, practicing empathy and reading comprehension strategies like making inferences and identifying cause and effect. What Is Climate Change? helped them develop informational text skills, such as analyzing data, understanding key vocabulary, and summarizing complex scientific concepts. Reading these books sparked rich discussions about real-world challenges and inspired students to apply their knowledge in a hands-on engineering project where they designed homes to withstand climate-related disasters.\r\nIn our classroom, reading is a dynamic and engaging experience. Students love curling up on the new cushions with a book in hand, creating a comfortable and inviting reading space. They read independently, in small groups, and as a whole class, often pausing to discuss key ideas, ask questions, and make connections. Many students, especially our hands-on learners, were deeply engaged in these new books. One student who struggles with traditional reading assignments was especially drawn to I Survived Hurricane Katrina, excitedly sharing connections to his own experiences with storms. Another student, fascinated by science, eagerly absorbed facts from What Is Climate Change? and took on a leadership role in our disaster-proof home project. These books have not only supported our curriculum but have also sparked curiosity, empathy, and excitement for learning.
