Through this, they are practicing several skills such as: thinking deeply about texts, building reading stamina, engaging with diverse books, authors, and narrators, engaging with mental health from different points of view, practicing collaboration, student-led discussions, and working on speaking and listening skills.\r\nThe first thing that students do as part of a book club is choose their books! Students fill out a Google Form and select their first, second, and third choices. From there, I place them in book club groups of four to five students. Once in book club groups, students meet to discuss their reading plan. Books Clubs last for five weeks, so the first step for each group is to make a reading schedule. Since independent reading is a crucial part of my classroom, most of the reading is done in class. Students are given ten to twenty minutes a day to read. After reading, students respond to what they have read in their readers' notebooks. If they need additional time, they are encouraged to read at home. Students meet every Friday to discuss their book with their group. I use the Literature Circle structure, so every student has a role. This helps get the discussion started. Roles include: Discussion Director, Illustrator, Passage Picker, Summarizer, and Connector. Students meet for about fifteen to twenty minutes. When their discussion is over, they rate their discussion and reflect on what went well and what they need to improve on. This is something they submit to me weekly.\r\nMany of my students are enjoying their new books! All My Rage and Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe are favorites. These books are both young adult (YA), but their central themes are about growing up and dealing with trauma. Many of my students find these books relatable. \r\nAs an English teacher to a diverse student population, one in which all my students are considered low socio-economic, it has always been my mission to find relevant, diverse texts that act as not only reflections of my students, but also as \"windows\" to lives and stories they might not usually see. Continuing to provide new books and choices is crucial to keeping students engaged. Since I do not speak Spanish, the translator has been an invaluable resource for bridging communication gaps, allowing me to assist students more effectively and ensuring they fully understand classroom instructions and assignments.\r\n\r\nThe students have been especially excited about the posters and word banks, which serve as helpful visual aids for expanding their vocabulary and improving their comprehension. They frequently reference them when completing assignments, and I have seen a noticeable boost in their confidence when participating in class discussions. The Pocketalk translator, in particular, has been a game-changer for my newcomer students, who now feel more comfortable asking questions and engaging with their peers. One student, who was initially very reserved due to the language barrier, has become much more engaged since using the translator, eagerly contributing to group activities and discussions.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, my classroom is now a more inclusive and supportive space for all learners.
