Through this, they are practicing several skills such as: thinking deeply about texts, building reading stamina, engaging with diverse books, authors, and narrators, engaging with mental health from different points of view, practicing collaboration, student-led discussions, and working on speaking and listening skills.\r\nThe first thing that students do as part of a book club is choose their books! Students fill out a Google Form and select their first, second, and third choices. From there, I place them in book club groups of four to five students. Once in book club groups, students meet to discuss their reading plan. Books Clubs last for five weeks, so the first step for each group is to make a reading schedule. Since independent reading is a crucial part of my classroom, most of the reading is done in class. Students are given ten to twenty minutes a day to read. After reading, students respond to what they have read in their readers' notebooks. If they need additional time, they are encouraged to read at home. Students meet every Friday to discuss their book with their group. I use the Literature Circle structure, so every student has a role. This helps get the discussion started. Roles include: Discussion Director, Illustrator, Passage Picker, Summarizer, and Connector. Students meet for about fifteen to twenty minutes. When their discussion is over, they rate their discussion and reflect on what went well and what they need to improve on. This is something they submit to me weekly.\r\nMany of my students are enjoying their new books! All My Rage and Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe are favorites. These books are both young adult (YA), but their central themes are about growing up and dealing with trauma. Many of my students find these books relatable. \r\nAs an English teacher to a diverse student population, one in which all my students are considered low socio-economic, it has always been my mission to find relevant, diverse texts that act as not only reflections of my students, but also as \"windows\" to lives and stories they might not usually see. Continuing to provide new books and choices is crucial to keeping students engaged. Thank you for helping me do this.","fullyFundedDate":1728921445756,"projectUrl":"project/head-and-heart-book-clubs-for-mental-he/8875862/","projectTitle":"Head and Heart: Book Clubs for Mental Health","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ferguson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8031973_orig.jpg?crop=2680,2680,x75,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1728917956991","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8031973"},{"teacherId":9800069,"projectId":8874182,"letterContent":"I cannot thank you enough for your generous support in providing my classroom with Spanish and English posters, word bank resources, and a Pocketalk translator. These tools have made a tremendous impact on my Spanish-speaking students, helping them feel more included and supported in their learning. Since I do not speak Spanish, the translator has been an invaluable resource for bridging communication gaps, allowing me to assist students more effectively and ensuring they fully understand classroom instructions and assignments.\r\n\r\nThe students have been especially excited about the posters and word banks, which serve as helpful visual aids for expanding their vocabulary and improving their comprehension. They frequently reference them when completing assignments, and I have seen a noticeable boost in their confidence when participating in class discussions. The Pocketalk translator, in particular, has been a game-changer for my newcomer students, who now feel more comfortable asking questions and engaging with their peers. One student, who was initially very reserved due to the language barrier, has become much more engaged since using the translator, eagerly contributing to group activities and discussions.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, my classroom is now a more inclusive and supportive space for all learners. Your donation has not only enhanced language accessibility but has also given my students the tools they need to succeed. Thanks to your contributions, my students had the opportunity to design, print, and create their own custom tote bags as part of a project in our Event Management and Design class. Using the Cricut machine and heat press, students developed their own mental health awareness designs, focusing on positive affirmations and self-care messages. This hands-on experience allowed them to explore graphic design, branding, and event merchandising—key skills in the event planning industry—while also promoting an important message about well-being.\r\n\r\nThe excitement in the classroom was undeniable when students first saw the materials. Many had never used a Cricut or a heat press before, and they were amazed at how professional their designs looked once transferred onto the bags. Seeing their own ideas come to life was a rewarding moment, and they took great pride in their work. Some even asked if they could make more for friends and family, which speaks to how meaningful the project was for them.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, my students will continue exploring branding and merchandising by designing promotional materials for upcoming school events. This project not only gave them valuable technical skills but also inspired them to think creatively about how design and messaging can influence an audience. Your generosity has made a lasting impact, and we truly appreciate your support in bringing these real-world learning experiences to our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1728680958654,"projectUrl":"project/creativity-and-mental-wellness-through-p/8870385/","projectTitle":"Creativity and Mental Wellness through Personalized Projects","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Salinas","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9800069_orig.jpg?crop=1290,1290,x0,y503&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1728522995396","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jacobsalinas"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_20821","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":358,"numTeachers":21,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":96,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"17.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":78.8,"schoolId":20821,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Miguel Contreras Learning Complex School of Business and Tourism on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Miguel Contreras Learning Complex School of Business and Tourism","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/los-angeles-unified-school-district/miguel-contreras-learning-ctr/20821"}
