They spent the majority of their time at Fundación Grupo Puntacana. There, they explored large-scale hydroponic and aquaponic farming systems, as well as vermicomposting. These hands-on experiences allowed students to connect classroom learning to real-world applications!\r\n\r\nImmersed in nature, the students participated in birdwatching, studied the role of native species in maintaining ecosystem health, and learned about the critical importance of bees in pollination. These encounters helped deepen their appreciation for biodiversity and the intricate balance of ecosystems.\r\n\r\nThe students also gained valuable insight into the human impact on marine environments. They learned about conservation efforts aimed at reversing the damage done to coral reefs, participating in Micro Fragmentation, an innovative technique to restore reef systems. Students snorkeled to local coral reefs, witnessing the vibrant beauty of marine life and the ongoing restoration work firsthand.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, they contributed to coastal resilience efforts by planting mangroves, which are essential for shoreline protection and serve as rich habitats for diverse species.\r\n\r\nThroughout the trip, students kept detailed journals of their experiences, reflections, and insights. These journal entries will serve as the foundation for student-created documentaries that will be shared with their families and the school community—an opportunity to inspire others with the story of their sustainable adventure.","fullyFundedDate":1733288832467,"projectUrl":"project/sustainable-student-scholars-travel-prog/8875616/","projectTitle":"Sustainable Student Scholars Travel Program","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Cheryl Hanlon-Minara","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5047178_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1729822464820","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5047178"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_1126","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":440,"numTeachers":24,"percentFrplEligible":84,"percentAsian":9,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":8,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":76,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"18.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":71.1,"schoolId":1126,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Middle College High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Middle College High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/middle-college-high-school/1126"}
