The items received have enhanced our school community building efforts. Students have used the materials for a number of projects including bringing awareness to issues such as dating violence prevention and mental health support. \r\n\r\nIn addition, the games and snacks have been very helpful when we have conflict resolution and mediation sessions. I can think of at least one session where 2 students were having a hard time communicating and I invited them to play air hockey, it was a great way to break the ice and invite them to talk about the conflict they were having. The snacks and games support our social skills building groups which we hold weekly. Students appreciate having nourishment during our group times!\r\n\r\nOur students needing more support have used the lamp and the weighted blanket as calming tools when they are overwhelmed and anxious. \r\n\r\nI have had staff use some of the items ( coloring, scratch paper, markers) to initiate discussions with students to resolve a conflict or have a difficult conversation. \r\n\r\nPlease know that every single item we received is being thoughtfully used in group sessions and individual meets. The new furnishings and resources have transformed our space into a more functional, inviting, and student-centered area, supporting a wide range of academic and behavioral initiatives. Students and staff reactions can some upped as WOW! \r\nConference Desk & Group Table:\r\n The introduction of a large conference desk and group table has significantly improved our ability to hold efficient and productive team meetings. These spaces are now regularly used by our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) team for planning, collaboration, and data review sessions. The tables also serve as vital stations for small-group instruction and peer learning, allowing for more interactive and inclusive educational experiences.\r\nPodium:\r\n The addition of a podium has elevated the professionalism and engagement during student presentations and staff-led workshops. It provides students with an authentic public speaking experience, helping to build confidence and communication skills—particularly during presentations from our nursing class students, who showcase their projects and practice patient education demonstrations.\r\nComfortable Orange Chairs:\r\n Our new set of vibrant, comfortable orange chairs has transformed the room into a warm and welcoming space. These chairs are student and staff favorites, creating a casual, relaxed atmosphere that encourages focus, creativity, and collaboration. They're also used during PBIS recognition events and group reflection sessions, adding a pop of color and comfort to our school culture.\r\nBookshelf:\r\n The new bookshelf is now home to an expanding library of academic resources, project materials, and professional development books. It serves both students and staff, making information more accessible and promoting a culture of reading and continuous learning.\r\nTogether, these enhancements have fostered a more collaborative, student-friendly, and achievement-oriented environment. I am deeply grateful for the support that made these updates possible, and the PBIS team and I look forward to building on this momentum to continue improving student outcomes and school culture.","fullyFundedDate":1744209966469,"projectUrl":"project/supporting-mental-health-through-thought/9146918/","projectTitle":"Supporting Mental Health Through Thoughtful Meeting Spaces and Furniture","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Geiger","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9889557_orig.jpg?crop=1658,1658,x716,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1741951990867","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9889557"},{"teacherId":9889557,"projectId":9139032,"letterContent":"I am very excited to share with you all the great things your donations have provided. Within days of receiving the items. I had students coming to the room for 5 to 10 minute resets. Many of my initial students were those that were full of energy, ADHD, always moving and getting into trouble. They came to the room to get the energy out, take a mental break and then were able to return to class. Some of the students did this daily and a few hourly for like 2 weeks. Then all of a sudden, they started disappearing one by one. So I started reaching out to staff to check on the students, staff are saying to me, man, so and so is really doing well. So the great news is that the fidgets, the music, the sand table, lights, furniture are all having major impacts on improving the mental health of the students in the building. In this short time, their behavior has increased dramatically. \r\n\r\nInitial reaction\r\n My room is divided into three parts separated with operation doors that swing both ways. So when students and staff walk into the metal health room their reactions are usually, \"sweet, cool, and that's awesome\". It's nice that my vision, and your donations have made this room come to life. The reaction is relief- one girleven told her mother, \"I want this for my apartment when I get older\". \r\n\r\nWhat are the next steps\r\n\r\nTo keep you up to date. Part 2 of the project was funded. Which was the main room. I have my desk, round table, podium built and in use. Today the Bookshelf and conference table will be arriving. I hope to have them assembled by tomorrow. My favorite reaction ever. One of the above mentioned students said \"Mr. Geiger, this is really nice, it's like you're the principal\", I simply said I'm like an assistant principal. \"But the Positive Kind\". I am noticing that we will have room for additional seating. Maybe a high top table and chairs. A nice alternative place for a student to work. \r\n\r\nPart three of the project is posted now and is part of the activities/ game room. Items include logic games, puzzles, puzzle table, soft tip dart board, and these items called popdarts. Check them out online, they are a cross between lawn darts and cornhole. Here I hope to see staff and students enjoy social time together. Once that is completed. I will make another project for other games including air hockey, and basketball pop a shot. I also look to add a reading nook, and alternative work site for students. It's all coming together, if you like Facebook me to be able to follow the updates to the room.","fullyFundedDate":1741219101988,"projectUrl":"project/students-and-staff-mental-health-room/9139032/","projectTitle":"Students and Staff Mental Health Room","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Geiger","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9889557_orig.jpg?crop=1658,1658,x716,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1741951990867","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9889557"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_73342","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":982,"numTeachers":38,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":9,"percentWhite":62,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":26,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"25.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":68.8,"schoolId":73342,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Melvindale High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Melvindale High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/melvindale-nrthrn-allen-pk-sd/melvindale-high-school/73342"}
