I feel that I have seen more acts of kindness, forgiveness, and empathy after using these materials. I have not had a chance to teach every lesson yet but we grow closer together as a class each time we do. My students adore the fun posters about feelings. They also really enjoy the new books, scenario cards, and activities from our lesson book.\r\n When my students are in my classroom we can see a wide range of emotions in a short amount of time. Sometimes students have disagreements during the day and often use the feelings posters to reference during a situation. It is quite amazing how observant and bright they are. I am very proud to hear students reference back to the posters charts such as the one that says \"How are you feeling\" and \"Healthy calming strategies\" when the need arises. I will say that not every disagreement or situation ends great but they know the posters are there to look at as well as I am here to help problem solve too. I urge students to try to work things out on their own first before coming to me to help.\r\n My students also love when I read to them as a class. This gives them a chance to sit on our carpet and relax for a moment while learning without even knowing it. I have read most of the books that were donated. Their favorite out of them so far has been \"Too Much: An Overwhelming Day\" and \"The Kids' Book of Diversity\". They felt that these books were very relatable in some way. These books not only show relatable scenarios, but it also shows new perspectives about the world and people around them.\r\n I have done an activity with my class over the book \"Too Much: An Overwhelming Day\" in the morning. I started the day with the prompt: \"When have you felt overwhelmed or stressed?\" and the students had to come in and brainstorm some ideas. I handed them all an index card for them to write one of their bigger stress triggers on. After they finished, they went and stuck it to the whiteboard where I had written a T-Chart with two questions on it. One was \"what makes you feel stressed or overwhelmed?\" and the other was \"What are some things you can do to help feel less stressed?\". After everyone had stuck theirs on the board I asked the students to share what they put. We then talked about some big stressors at school and how it can make us feel. We then read the story and discussed what had happened in the story and the cause and effects of the events that happened in the story to make the main character feel overwhelmed. A lot of my students then wanted to share some ideas as to how they could make them feel better. We then talked about some coping skills to help relax our brains and bodies. We even tried deep breathing and yoga. We then went back and talked about some of their major stressors that they had written earlier. We brainstormed ideas on how we could help us relax as well as ways to prevent the stressors from happening. An example stressor was that the workload of their homework made them overwhelmed sometimes. I then asked if they take the time to spread their work out over the week and do a little at a time or if they waited until the last minute. They might have procrastinated just a little which caused them to stress because they had everything to do in one night.\r\n I am so grateful to have this opportunity to not only teach my students core subject material, but also how to cope with different things and make a better impact on the people and world around us. They are becoming more and more kind and making our classroom such a joy. I could not be more proud of them and I know that they will continue to grow when they leave my class and share their knowledge with others. Thank you so much for shining your light on us and allowing us this wonderful opportunity!","fullyFundedDate":1757006939582,"projectUrl":"project/safety-and-kindness-in-the-classroom/9449536/","projectTitle":"Safety and Kindness in the Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kuehl","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10072254_orig.jpg?crop=1386,1386,x901,y645&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1751915608185","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10072254"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_76497","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":206,"numTeachers":21,"percentFrplEligible":55,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":99,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":0,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"9.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":63.6,"schoolId":76497,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Meadow Heights Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Meadow Heights Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/missouri/meadow-heights-school-district-r2/meadow-heights-elementary-school/76497"}
