They come in every morning and say \"good morning\" to the fish. The fish tank is near our calm corner so they have also taken to watching the fish when needing some time to reset during the day. The use of a hydroponic tank has also sparked a lot of questions and discussions in our class. My students also love to have jobs relating to the tank, such as cleaning and feeding the fish. Since it is a hydroponic tank, we have also had great discussions about plants and how we can grow more plants for our tank. \r\nThis is something I wish i had started years ago! First, students have been really appreciative of the fidget tools. While we practice using them to help with focus and managing emotions in our \"Calming Classroom,\" students feel empowered when they get to take the tools to the classroom and use them there too. They have expressed a sense of responsibility, and I see them taking that responsibility seriously as they take care in where they keep the fidget tools and how they use them in the classroom. It has been rewarding to see students grow in using them independently. Some students are now able to identify on their own when they need to use a tool and can use the tools for a short amount of time before returning back to the assignment ready to learn without becoming as frustrated as they used to.\r\n\r\nAnother wonderful addition to the \"Calming Classroom\" has been the carpet. While many students receive one-on-one support in the space, sometimes groups use the space for lessons on identifying emotions, learning different coping strategies, and practicing those strategies. The carpet allows us to comfortably gather around our interactive board and use the floor space to engage in hands-on and kinesthetic learning. Students have shared that these activities have been some of their favorites from sorting feelings into different \"Zones\" using the colors on the carpet to sitting on the carpet and moving around picking different facial expressions of emotions on the board that match different scenarios. Similarly, the foam puzzle floor mat has helped make a quiet, calming space in the room more comfortable for students that benefit the most from quiet time to themselves in order to more quickly feel ready to return to the classroom to learn. \r\n\r\nNot only do I appreciate these tools, but others have benefitted, as well. The \"Calming Classroom\" has become the space for students accessing individual therapy with community partners, as well. The variety of tools and spaces to use within he room has made an asset to the entire school community. For that, the students and I are incredibly thankful and appreciative each time we use the space.","fullyFundedDate":1726657604359,"projectUrl":"project/mental-behavioral-health-space-for-the/8773651/","projectTitle":"Mental & Behavioral Health Space for the School","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Caprara","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2827626"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_64782","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":348,"numTeachers":38,"percentFrplEligible":60,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":11,"percentWhite":16,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":59,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"9.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":63.4,"schoolId":64782,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Meadow Hall Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Meadow Hall Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/maryland/montgomery-county-public-schools/meadow-hall-elementary-school/64782"}
