We explored it as a whole class, and they immediately began utilizing the textures, colors, and calming tools, asking if they could try them \"just for a minute.\" That first day, one student, who was feeling frustrated about a tricky activity, quietly asked if they could go to the \"Rainbow Rug\" (which is what they call our \"safe space\" in the classroom). After a few minutes of using the fidget tools and resting on the soft rug, they returned to their work with a smile and renewed focus. Moments like that have shown just how powerful this space can be for helping young learners manage their emotions.\r\n\r\nNow, the Rainbow Rug has become a safe and inviting space where my students go when they are feeling sad, frustrated, overwhelmed, or any other \"big feeling\" that might make learning hard. Sometimes they sit and read a book; other times, they squeeze a stress ball or run their fingers over a calming texture. It has helped my students recognize and respond to their emotions in ways that allow them to rejoin learning ready and focused.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we're incorporating the Rainbow Rug into our social-emotional learning lessons, through our 7 Habits and Leader in Me curriculum. We are working on identifying our own emotions, as well as helping others when they may feel big emotions. One of the habits is Habit 1: Be Proactive, and we have used this space to get ahead of any big emotions and allow the student to calm their bodies before it escalates into something bigger. This space has also allowed students to support each other when they notice a friend might need a break. Your generosity has given us more than sensory materials, you've given us a daily reminder that it's okay to feel our feelings and a safe place to work through them.","fullyFundedDate":1742954220314,"projectUrl":"project/little-learners-big-feelings-a-sensory/9154251/","projectTitle":"Little Learners, Big Feelings: A Sensory Space for Success","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Szatkowski","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8300655_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1741655699190","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8300655"},{"teacherId":4941630,"projectId":9158513,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting our project, Harnessing the Wind: Literacy Meets STEM! Since both of these novels are so engaging, students were able to picture themselves in the story and this led to some very lively classroom discussions. Along the way with each book, students also completed activities which allowed them to dive deeper into both the novel and the situations characters were in. \r\n\r\nWhen we finished reading each book, there was a culminating project and the one pictured is called a \"Bloom Ball\" because it looks like a flower bloom.
