When students first saw the new mallets in our band room the reaction was excitement! Students immediately started using them to hear the timbre and feel of each pair. The mallets you helped purchase have already gotten a lot of use in our classroom, too. We have been using them to play the marimba, xylophone and vibraphone. All of our concert band repertoire requires mallet playing, so our new mallets are used for three hours every day for each of our pieces of music. \r\n\r\nWe have a number of percussionists in our program, and I have witnessed an increase in the amount of practicing students have been doing. Many students come to the band room before school starts to get a little mallet playing in. One student is even working on a four mallet marimba solo, which is encouraging a higher skill level of advanced literature. Having mallets that create beautiful sounds are so encouraging to our students as they begin their journey this school year! Soon the class will be embarking upon a book of choice unit in which students will be encouraged to choose Ishmael to read alongside their classmates. The group reading of the novel will push students to delve deeper than they otherwise would have on their own. For many students, these characters become role models, showing that success is not defined by the absence of obstacles but by the determination to move forward despite them.
