However, there are those that still struggle with reading fluently, mainly because they are working so hard to decode accurately that it takes extra time. This extra time leads to disconnected text processing and makes comprehending what they just worked so hard to read, more challenging. However, Read Naturally is helping my students become fluent readers. \r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, my students are now able to have a reading routine that allows them to practice reading text that is written in a more \"natural\" way using topics in which the students are actually interested. They love reading about lake monsters, The Great Wall of China, and athletes like Pele and Magic Johnson. After reading a text for the first time (cold read), a student's wpm (words per minute) is given and they graph it in blue. They practice reading the text each day and then a second timed measure is taken (hot read) and graphed in red. It is amazing how motivated they are to watch their scores rise. They challenge themselves to reach a goal they have set and they begin to understand how punctuation affects what they are reading. By answering related comprehension questions, the students demonstrate the parts of the text and types of questions that they understand and with which parts they struggle. They are becoming more confident everyday! Thank you for supporting my students and helping them become more fluent readers!","fullyFundedDate":1726241584981,"projectUrl":"project/fun-fluency-for-struggling-readers/8648562/","projectTitle":"Fun Fluency for Struggling Readers","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Cohen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6113587"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_75395","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1187,"numTeachers":74,"percentFrplEligible":40,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":64,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":16,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"16.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":91.3,"schoolId":75395,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Maria Weston Chapman Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Maria Weston Chapman Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/massachusetts/weymouth-public-schools/maria-weston-chapman-mid-school/75395"}
