This project has brought such joy and connection to our classroom community—especially for students who are still learning English or who may never have owned a book before. Having a personal copy allows each student to follow along during our class readings, take notes, highlight favorite parts, and truly engage with the story. \r\n\r\nThe story we read together helped us explore themes of empathy, kindness, and what it means to feel different—powerful ideas that resonate deeply in our incredibly diverse classroom. My students come from all over the world—Asia, Central and South America, Africa, Eastern Europe, and tiny island nations—and together we discussed how the characters' experiences reminded them of their own journeys. Our read-aloud became a bridge between languages, cultures, and hearts. Students practiced making inferences about the characters, shared thoughtful insights in writing, and grew in confidence as readers and thinkers.\r\n\r\nThis project made a lasting impact on my teaching and my students' learning. Because of your support—and the help of The DonorsChoose Community—I was able to provide an equitable learning experience for every student, whether they were learning from home or in person. Watching them turn pages together, quote the text in their writing, and proudly take their books home was a beautiful reminder of how powerful a single story can be. You've helped my students see themselves as readers, learners, and members of a caring community.","fullyFundedDate":1607403305204,"projectUrl":"project/students-need-books-at-home/5324295/","projectTitle":"Students Need Books at Home!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Moskal","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-moskal"},{"teacherId":4184133,"projectId":9242307,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, our library has become more of an inclusive and inspiring space for every student. The new books have allowed my students to explore stories in both English and their native languages, helping them grow as bilingual and bi-literate learners. Many of these texts introduce essential reading skills—like identifying story elements, making inferences, and exploring character motivation—but they also open doors to cultural understanding and self-expression. For my English learners, being able to read in a language they understand builds confidence and a bridge to learning English more fluently.\r\n\r\nReading time in our library is now filled with energy and curiosity. You'll see students curled up with graphic novels in Spanish, picture books in Ukrainian, and early chapter books in English—sometimes switching between languages as they learn new words and phrases. The excitement on their faces when they find a book in their home language is something I wish you could see. They feel seen, valued, and connected.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping create a safe, welcoming space where every child can see themselves reflected in the pages of a book. This all would NOT have been possible without each of you. I am so grateful that you value the importance of creativity in children's' lives. The story of Salva and Nya opened my students' eyes to life beyond their own experiences and helped them develop a deeper sense of empathy and global awareness. Many students were moved by Salva's courage, resilience, and determination in the face of overwhelming adversity. These themes resonated strongly, especially with students who face their own daily challenges.\r\n\r\nThe book sparked rich discussions about perseverance, the value of education, and the importance of access to clean water. It inspired students to think about how they can make a difference in the world, no matter their circumstances. I saw students becoming more engaged, asking thoughtful questions, and even brainstorming ways to help others—locally and globally.\r\n\r\nBeyond literacy, the book became a springboard for cross-curricular learning. We integrated geography by mapping Sudan and South Sudan, built background knowledge through nonfiction texts about water scarcity, and explored character development and theme in our writing. Most importantly, A Long Walk to Water brought our class closer together, creating a shared sense of compassion and purpose.","fullyFundedDate":1742670697946,"projectUrl":"project/the-value-of-resilience-and-empathy/9104168/","projectTitle":"The Value of Resilience and Empathy","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Blair","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9410217_orig.png?crop=237,237,x0,y47&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1739990462805","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9410217"},{"teacherId":9410217,"projectId":9104664,"letterContent":"Reading Crenshaw is having a profound impact on our classroom community. The book is opening the door to meaningful discussions about poverty, empathy, and resilience. Students are connecting deeply with Jackson's experiences and emotions, many of them relating to his worries and responsibilities. The presence of Crenshaw, the imaginary cat, has sparked creative thinking and is allowing students to explore how imagination and hope can be powerful coping tools in difficult times.\r\n\r\nAs we read, students have begun to express more empathy toward one another, often referencing moments from the book during class discussions and even recess conversations. The story also helps normalize talking about real-life struggles in a safe, respectful environment, encouraging students to support each other more openly.\r\n\r\nAcademically, the book is enhancing their comprehension skills as they are making predictions, analyzing character motivations, and exploring complex themes in a way that feel personal and relevant. Overall, Crenshaw is becoming more than just a story—it is a shared experience that is strengthening our classroom community.","fullyFundedDate":1739829373143,"projectUrl":"project/teaching-empathy-resilience-and-real-w/9104664/","projectTitle":"Teaching Empathy, Resilience, and Real-World Awareness in the Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Blair","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9410217_orig.png?crop=237,237,x0,y47&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1739990462805","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9410217"},{"teacherId":9410217,"projectId":9103977,"letterContent":"I wanted to take a moment to share how our new set of classroom headphones has made a significant impact on student learning. These headphones have become an essential tool in our daily instruction, allowing students to engage with lessons in new and meaningful ways.\r\n\r\nThe headphones are used for a variety of activities, including listening to audiobooks, following along with interactive lessons, participating in language-learning programs, and engaging with educational videos. They allow students to focus more effectively, minimizing background distractions and creating a more immersive learning experience.\r\n\r\nSince introducing the headphones, I have noticed a remarkable improvement in student engagement and comprehension. Struggling readers can now listen to text while following along, improving their fluency and confidence. Students working on individualized assignments can complete tasks at their own pace without being disrupted by surrounding noise. Additionally, those who benefit from auditory learning now have an extra resource to reinforce key concepts.\r\n\r\nWhat's truly exciting is how much the students love using the headphones! They feel more in control of their own learning and enjoy the ability to engage with digital content in a way that suits their needs. Whether they're practicing pronunciation, exploring new subjects, or diving into an audiobook, the excitement and enthusiasm in the classroom are undeniable.\r\n\r\nThank you for your support in helping to make this learning experience possible.
