The blocks have become a central part of our daily play and learning experiences. Students use them during center time, small group work, and integrated STEM lessons to explore balance, design, and spatial reasoning. These high-quality blocks encourage open-ended play and purposeful problem-solving—key components of developmentally appropriate practice recommended by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).\r\n\r\nRecently, our class used the blocks to retell the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Students worked in groups to design bridges for each goat to cross without \"tumbling into the river.\" This project supported language development, story comprehension, and engineering thinking. During another investigation, children tested which solid shapes could slide or roll, down a ramp constructed with our wooden unit blocks. This deepened their understanding of geometry and physical science through hands-on experimentation. These experiences blend storytelling, scientific inquiry, and collaboration in meaningful, child-centered ways.\r\n\r\nThe excitement when the blocks first arrived was incredible—wide eyes, eager hands, and a chorus of \"Can we build now?\" Students immediately began working together, negotiating plans, sharing ideas, and constructing everything from bridges to castles. Their play revealed deep engagement, curiosity, and problem-solving skills. These moments truly captured the essence of kindergarten learning—active, social, imaginative, and joyful.\r\n\r\nNext, our class will use the wooden blocks to design a \"Block City,\" where students will plan buildings, roads, and community structures that reflect their understanding of neighborhoods. This ongoing project encourages mathematical thinking, cooperation, and real-world connections. \r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, our classroom now has the tools to support rich, developmentally appropriate learning through play every single day.","fullyFundedDate":1757423987737,"projectUrl":"project/block-play-integrating-play-based-learn/9504387/","projectTitle":"Block Play: Integrating Play-Based Learning in Kindergarten","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. O'Brien","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5908084_orig.jpg?crop=1155,1155,x11,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1664753854811","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5908084"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_65605","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":93,"numTeachers":8,"percentFrplEligible":58,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":93,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":2,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - Pre-K","studentTeacherRatio":"11.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":80.0,"schoolId":65605,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Manson Park School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Manson Park School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/maine/rsu-53-msad-53/manson-park-primary-school/65605"}
